I think I heard Doc Emrick say Eddie picked Firing Line. Good enough for me.

Tri: All/1,2/1,2

AP will probably win this race, but I consider Dortmund a huge overlay.

My bets:

$100 Win 2
$20 Exacta 2-1
$20 Trifecta 2-1-4,7

Fixed - only the house won with the favorite offering no odds and the longshots coming in second and third.

Can't feel bad because no one won on this race.

I don't like losing, but it's a pleasure to watch a horse like that. Just fucking awesome. Maybe he is a Secretariat or Spectacular Bid. He went fast and easy with no urging.

There will be horses that were born to go a mile and a half waiting in New York, but if he can control the race I'm not sure his light pedigree will matter.

Nice payday...did a $4 Ex, Keyed 1 with everyone.

Had $20 on 1 and 2 each to win.

Then another $10 in Superfectas

Got $250 on that exacta, LOL...and as I type this still dont remember who came in Second....all I know is that I saw him coming on the outside when they turned and knew it wasnt Dort or Fire...so that meant better odds.

TRIPLE CROWN? Yes or No?

Tale of Verve and Divining Rod got me paid. :-) Threw em both in the tri keys.

AP looked impressive. I expect Dortmund and Firing Line to fall off the chase but you will get some fresh horses back for the belmont.

I'm going to guess that Carpe Diem has a better race in him than what he showed in Louisville, but how about Materiality, Mubtaahij, Frosted, or Keen Ice? Not only are these horses all bred to run all day, but they've been pointed for their best race at a buck and a half for five weeks while AP has had to shorten up from a mile and a quarter to 1-3/16.

The race is going to hinge on whether these goofs all just let AP dance around the track at will. The lead is the place to be at a mile and a half. Nobody is going to want to hook this horse in a speed duel. Don't be shocked though if Espinoza thinks he's going to lay right behind Materiality because he has a long, long way to catch him, and then he can't get there. The lead is 9/10 of the law.

We was robbed because of the track conditions.

Firing-Line stumbled out of the gate and never recovered. Dortmund jockey said the horse didn't like the mud in his face and his effort was lacking.

Belmont will be a whole different race than this was.

I'm going to say that Materiality is no worse than the second best horse of this generation. And I don't love Mubtaahij, but he certainly has a pedigree to get a mile and a half and the ability to race close enough to the pace. AP may well win, but I doubt it's going to be a cakewalk.

You are daft Materiality is the 2nd best horse? I remember you said Orb was the best horse of 10 years I will look it and book it.and i hope it pours June 6th in Elmont :D

We'll see, Walt.

And I never said any such thing about Orb. I said he was the best of his generation and I think he was. I suppose you could make a case for Palace Malice or Will Take Charge, but I think Orb did enough to warrant being called the top horse from the 2011 generation.

all I'm saying is AP won his last 6 races by a combined 30.5 lengths damn impressive

Oh, there's no doubt about it. His race yesterday was breathtaking. I might argue that the field was a bit weak, but he can only beat the horses he's racing against. And it's the way he beat them that was impressive. He brushed Dortmund off like an annoying fly.

We're seeing a great horse, but how great is the question. These modern horses are so lightly raced, it's hard to really know. By the time they got to Belmont Affirmed had dominated Alydar enough times that there was little doubt. I'd still argue that Easy Goer was better than Sunday Silence, but it's probably a bad argument. I just look at the two horses and have a hard time saying anything else.

Anyway, I think Materiality is a serious animal. His effort in the Derby as inexperienced as he was is pretty damn noteworthy. And until yesterday I would say the Florida Derby was the most impressive race any horse has had this year. If Espinoza allows Materiality to dictate the pace and he waltzes around there unpressured, I don't believe Pharoah is just going to come roaring past him. It will be a memorable stretch drive.

Dortmund = he is who we thought he is, empty down the lane again with those weak final fractions like a pitcher with a 4-0 w/l record he is perceived to be better than he really is if Baffert can keep him together maybe he can be a decent 7-8 furlong horse

Firing Line = if anyone bet him after what was already known about him and the monsoon hitting Pimlico you got what you deserve

The winner = went into the race lengths faster than the others and took care of business

Is he spent, does he have more in his tank?
He will have to somewhat fresh and fast endure horses taking runs at him.

Who will hold up the final 2 furlongs, nobody knows.

Yeah, I think a buck and an eighth might be the limit of Dortmund's abilities. But I wouldn't discount the possibility that he has simply gone off form. He's had a series of demanding races dating back to late last year. There aren't many horses who ever win six in a row at any level.

One thing I don't really believe is that Dortmund (or Firing Line) was drastically compromised by the track condition. I didn't expect Firing Line to do much yesterday and he didn't. As for Dortmund, I love the typical jockey excuse, "he didn't like mud in his face". What mud? He was in the middle of the track with nobody in front of him most of the time. He was asked to challenge AP on the last turn and he just came up empty. He's just not as good a horse. He got outrun by a superior animal that did it without breaking a sweat. I think even spmack will acknowledge that at this point.

Dortmund was one of the slower horses going into the Derby and that has continued on.

Firing Line had the issue with changing leads in Kentucky. That could be an indication that there was an issue brewing or there was already an issue. When the moonson hit, if there was a brewing physical issue that river they were running in would likely exacerbate the issue.

The first horse I owned wouldn't go faster than a 2 minute clip on an off-track. He wouldn't extend himself at all unless he felt solid footing.

I'm not saying that track conditions can't or don't affect horses. I'm saying I don't believe conditions had a big effect on those two specific horses yesterday. I think some people believe that they might have a chance against AP in different circumstances and that's fantasyland. The point is moot for the near future though since I'm guessing both of them will get an extended rest right now.

I don't really agree with you on Dortmund's speed. His Beyer in the Santa Anita was one of the better figs. I certainly don't think he has brilliant speed like AP or Materiality, but I thought there was a chance that he might be able to get along side AP, look him in the eye and out-tough him. He struggled immediately when asked to go yesterday. Maybe it was the track to some degree, but he obviously doesn't have the same form he did earlier. Now I just think there's too much disparity in raw ability between him and AP anyway.

If that moonson didn't hit there is a reasonable chance Firing Line gets closer or maybe the issue he may ahave already had would have affected him anyway fast track or river surface. No way to know.

I don't use a Racing Form or Beyer numbers
I think Thorograph had him 7th or 8th fastest coming into Kentucky and I didn't have him much higher combining that with weak final fractions.

You're a Thorograph guy, huh? Well, there's no arguing with the raw numbers. They are what they are. When I was out in New York I used to get a kick out of the Ragozin disciples. They looked like they were homeless and they were always going on and on about "the Sheets".

My biggest issue with speed handicapping is that you will end up with the favorite most of the time. I find it much more valuable at sprint distances. Again, I would liken it to a starting pitcher. Speed is one of a horse's tools. Just like a strikeout pitch is a tool of a pitcher. The mere presence of that tool is just an advantage, not necessarily indicative of a certain result. Of course, on certain occasions you'll find a race where others simply aren't capable of moving their bodies as fast as one of the entries, but those situations are few and far between and the horse in question is usually odds on.

I consider myself a trip handicapper looking for value. I'm comfortable with my losing bet on Dortmund yesterday. And I'll be comfortable losing in the Belmont against AP at 1/5 or 2/5.
