The 16th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, now 24 years old, is likely to be a Chicago Bull next season because of his familiarity with Fred Hoiberg, who he played for at Iowa State for one season (2011-2012) after transferring from Minnesota (originally White was going to transfer and sign with Kentucky but a panic attack caused him to cancel the trip). He led his Iowa State team in points (13.4), assists (5.0), rebounds (9.3), steals (1.2), and blocks (0.9) - the first Cyclone player to do so since Fred Hoiberg (1993-1994). He's obviously a versatile forward and has the tools and talent to be an NBA player.
Problem: He's afraid of flying and has anxiety issues. It's been well-documented since he was drafted. It wasn't an issue in college though.
Solution: (From C.J. Moore of Bleacher Report Jan. 2014) "I did tell somebody the other day, they asked would you get on a plane with Coach Hoiberg, and I said I'd follow coach into a volcano with airplanes shooting out of it. It was a joke, but really it wasn't. It's like a statement to my loyalty to him and how much I believe in him. I guess he did make me a lot more comfortable."
White and Hoiberg would talk almost every day about his future, but many of their discussions were outside of basketball.
"That's why he's more so a friend or a father figure, and I think he plays that role for a lot of his players, and that's why they have the success they do." Best case comparisons: Lamar Odom, Boris Diaw, Andre Iguodala
