Even in a league that hands out second, third and fourth chances to talented players and will invent any ridiculous excuse to try and appease the public, Rice seems like he'll forever be on the outside looking in. That led NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith to wonder to ESPN if there was a concerted effort by the owners to keep Rice out of the league (via Pro Football Talk):

“This, unfortunately, is a league that has a history of blackballing players. I find it hard to believe that a player of Mr. Rice’s caliber hasn’t at least gotten one offer from a team to come work out,” Smith said.

That's a strong claim, but it's easy to believe. Rice has been free to sign with anyone for some time now. His down 2013 season, with just 3.1 yards per carry, doesn't help. But before that he had four straight 1,000-yard seasons and averaged at least 4 yards per carry in every one. Dozens of running backs who aren't as good as Rice have signed since Rice was cut. This is about more than football, of course.

If he was still an All-Pro level RB he would have a job, but NFL teams don't want a backup that will bring his baggage.

Seacrest just has a hard time wrapping his hands around this notion.

The great DaJuan Harris was signed as a FA.

Rice isn't the first player being blackballed and he will not be the last either.

The ex-Packer? He's 26.

He's a change-of-pace 3rd down back probably making minimum money. He can also return kicks (he's nothing special)

So nothing like Ray Rice.

No tryouts at all means he is being blackballed. I'm far from the only one with this thought.

Seacrest....your guy George McCaskey is on the league conduct policy board.

The next time your paths cross, sit down with him and explain your concern with the injustice that is occurring regarding Ray Rice. Forte needs a backup. Maybe he will see the light. He's already given Ray McDonald another chance and that went very well. Why not Rice?

But tell me this, is the head of NFLPA wrong like i am about Rice being blackballed?

He's the head of the Players Association so I'm not surprised about his opinion.

http://bills.buffalonews.com/2015/05/31 ... i-article/

"There are multiple factors working against Rice. Any team signing him must be prepared for an avalanche of public backlash given the gruesome nature of his crime. The lasting image of Rice striking Palmer so violently forced the NFL to change how it handles such cases. Rice's indefinite suspension was overturned on appeal in November.

That has led some -- including NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith -- to suggest NFL owners are colluding to keep Rice out of the league.

"This, unfortunately, is a league that has a history of blackballing players," Smith said in an interview last week with ESPN. "I find it hard to believe that a player of Mr. Rice's caliber hasn't at least gotten one offer from a team to come work out."

Of course, the other issue when it comes to signing Rice deals with his on-the-field performance. His production in 2013 -- 214 carries for 660 yards, an average of 3.1 yards per rush -- dropped dramatically from previous seasons. He's 28 years old and plays a position that is viewed as replaceable in today's NFL.

Other veteran running backs like Chris Johnson, Steven Jackson and Pierre Thomas are also out of the league, and none of them are on video knocking out their fiancee."

http://www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/the-real- ... -bullshit/

"But if you think that teams are shying away from Rice solely because he knocked his future wife out in an Atlantic City elevator, you don’t know football. The Bills just signed Richie Incognito, an infamous bully who tore apart the Dolphins locker room by preying on a rookie. The Cowboys welcomed back Josh Brent after he drunkenly crashed his car, killing a teammate. And, of course, Adrian Peterson will be welcomed back by the Vikings — or pursued by a number of other teams — despite whipping his son in the testicles and otherwise displaying sociopathic tendencies.

The real reason why teams aren’t signing, or even calling, Ray Rice is because they don’t think he’s good enough to be worth the PR risk. It’s a bit like Michael Sam, except that Sam hasn’t done anything wrong except profess his love for men in a league full of guys who don’t like “sweet stuff.” If Aaron Rodgers was in Rice’s position, he’d be getting calls. Ditto J.J. Watt, Dez Bryant and even Ndamukong Suh. Rice, however, was trending downward even before he was caught beating a woman — he posted a mere 3.1 yards per rush and four touchdowns in 2013, after four straight 1,000 yard seasons.

From ESPN:

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE PLAYERS [INCOGNITO, PETERSON, GREG HARDY] AND RICE IS WHAT THEY CAN BRING TO THE FIELD, ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF PETERSON. TEAMS ARE MORE WILLING TO DEAL WITH THE NEGATIVE BACKLASH IF THAT PLAYER CAN RUN FOR 1,300 YARDS, SCORE DOUBLE-DIGIT TOUCHDOWNS AND SINGLE-HANDEDLY WIN GAMES. THIS IS WHY PETERSON IS ENSURED OF PLAYING AGAIN — WHETHER IT’S WITH THE VIKINGS OR ANOTHER TEAM — AND RICE IS NOT."

He's not worth the headache, Seacrest. If you want to call a team not signing a running back with his baggage on the downside of his career blackballing, fine. You win. I would call it a smart business move. And the NFL is a business.

If there was video of the others, like there is of Rice, then they would all be in the same boat as him.

No. IIRC there were photos released of Peterson's child. If AP has Ray Rice's skill set, he's gone.

I fail to see the problem with black balling players who brutalized their family members.
If you don't want to get blackballed don't beat the shit out of your kids or wives or girlfriend.
Seems easy to me

No, Darko. Rice did not create this situation. The fact that he sucks has nothing to do with it. It's collusion.

That's why AP and Hardy aren't playing football this year. One beats his kid and the other beats his lady and somehow they are being kept out of the league.

I see what you did there. 8)

Was Mike Vick colluded on when he got out of the clink?

Mike Vick just killed a couple dogs. He didn't beat the shit out of a woman in public or send his child to the hospital.

Yeah but we are talking about public backlash supposedly causing a blackballing. There was huge backlash on Vick's situation.

I guess a couple dead dogs isn't as big a deal as knocking the everloving shit out of your girl. Also... vick still (supposedly) had some gas in the tank, which I suppose counts for something.
Also, teams are getting to be sick to shit of this crap. Rice and McDonald don't get the same heights of backlash without being built on the foundation of Vick's stupid shit.
