Illini go in as the #1 seed after individual play, teams now go to Match Play. Starts today on Golf Channel

Tuesday pairings at NCAA Men's Championship

BRADENTON, Fla. – This is old hat for the men.

A week after women’s coaches sat in the hot seat and strategized over lineups for the match-play portion of the NCAA Championship for the first time, the men took center stage Monday and made selections for the seventh consecutive year.

Coaches from the top-eight teams sat in a room and manipulated their lineup to match their opponents, similar to the Presidents Cup. The coach for the higher-seeded team earned the option of going first or deferring, then one coach threw out a name for Match 1 and the opposing coach selected a candidate.

Mike Small, coach of top-seeded Illinois, was the only coach who threw out a name first and did not defer the first match. Small went with his top three players first – Thomas Detry, Brian Campbell, Charlie Danielson – and is throwing freshmen Dylan Meyer and Nick Hardy in the pressure cooker that comes with the final two spots of the lineup.

Georgia, Texas and Vanderbilt each saved its best players for the final position, a risky decision if the matches are decided before it gets to the anchor match. The Bulldogs are going with junior Lee McCoy last against South Florida and the Longhorns are saving sophomore Beau Hossler for the end against Southern Cal. Senior Hunter Stewart will go last in the Commodores match against LSU.

LSU put its best players first and fifth, South Florida stacked its three best players in the middle of the lineup at Nos. 2-4 and USC put its best two players at Nos. 2 and 4.

Here is a rundown of all the quarterfinal matches. Stroke-play seeding is in parenthesis. (The quarterfinals will be live on Golf Channel Tuesday at 10:30AM ET; semifinals will be at 3:30PM ET and the championship matches will be Wednesday at 3PM ET.)

 Surprisingly they do recruit a lot of kids from the Midwest.
I would think a majority of the big time golf is being played by kids
in warmer climates.

Brian Campbell SR Irvine, Calif. (Mater Dei)
Charlie Danielson JR Osceola, Wis. (Osceola)

A lot of that is changing with all of the inside hitting areas now, the same for baseball. Yes a lot of the talent will still come from the south, but they are recruiting more and more up here. In addition kids don't get burned out so much because you can't play all year long.

Having trouble finding more info but here is the Final Four...

LSU knocked off Vanderbilt, Georgia beat South Florida, USC eliminated Texas, and Illinois squeaked by UCLA in the quarterfinals of the DI Men's Golf Team Match Play Championship at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.

A bit surprised Vandy and Texas got beat. I'll tune in this afternoon for sure.

In some small way, I am rooting for Illinois.

I watched most of this yesterday afternoon after work. They looked pretty good early but lost some leads and the hotter team
obviously pulled away. Nice to see their program in such good shape and they have some young kids on the team that appear
to be the real deal. Detry might be PGA Tour material.

I gave Illinois the kiss of death by slightly cheering for them.

I see what you did there.

I hate Illinois in general but was cheering for them yesterday since their freshman star Hardy is from Northbrook (where my office is).

Most fascinating part of the day was watching the chunky Asian kid form USC putt. He looks at the hole and not the ball while putting, never seen anyone do that ever. He'll be playing today so keep any eye out for that. ITs really odd, but seems to work for him.

Love the college golf. Watched the women's last week and haven't missed a minute of the men's so far.

Davis Love used to do this, and Jordan Spieth does in on putts I would say inside of 8 feet.

I guess I'll have to pay more attention to Spieth cause I've never noticed that.
