I just don't understand how guys on here use stats to prove an argument. When I do it,I'm nuts. I understand what CH said. There were a lot of Goons back in the early days but no way in Hell is a 27 goal season any thing approaching a superstar.

If the quality of competition is higher, it's harder to score. The 1980s NHL wasn't a magical time. There were just lots of lousy players holding down jobs because fewer countries were playing at an elite level. Strip out almost all the Czechs, Slovaks, Finns, Danes, Russians, most Swedes, and most Americans in today's league, replace them with ECHL and god forbid LNAH guys, and I think you'd see superstars score 150 points with ease.

Even with the higher level of competition, there needs to be more scoring. Cutting down on unpenalized obstruction would go a long way to restoring the days of multiple 100-point scorers. Here are the scoring leaders for 1996:

Lemieux: 161
Jagr: 149
Sakic: 120
Francis: 116
Forsberg: 115

or perhaps 2007:

Crosby: 120
Thornton: 114
Lecavalier: 108
Heatley: 105
St. Louis: 102

but ew, 2015:

Benn: 87
Tavares: 86
Crosby: 84
Ovechkin: 81
Voracek: 81

There's so much elite talent in the league right now. I'd love to see them scoring more, whether they're setting up goals or finishing them off. John Tavares absolutely should be hitting 100 points every year.
