1. Magic Johnson, Lakers, 1980. Replacing an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at center, Magic scores 42 points, grabs 15 rebounds and dishes out seven assists as L.A. beats Philly in Game 6 to win the NBA title.

2. Adrian Peterson, Vikings, 2007. Sets NFL record with 296 rushing yards in one game.

3. Kerry Wood, Cubs, 1998. Ties MLB record with 20 strikeouts, allowing only an infield single in 2-0 win over Houston.

4. Gale Sayers, Bears, 1965. In a December game against the 49ers, scores six touchdowns on 336 total yards -- 113 rushing, 89 receiving and 134 on punt returns.

5. John Lackey, Angels, 2002. Pitching on three days' rest, becomes first rookie to start and win Game 7 of the World Series in 93 years as Angels beat Giants 4-1.

6. Ken Dryden, Canadiens, 1971. Dryden had played just six NHL games before the playoffs, but leads Montreal to the Stanley Cup, including 3-2 win over Chicago in Game 7.

7. Wilt Chamberlain, Philadelphia Warriors, 1960. On Jan. 25 against the Knicks, scores rookie record 58 points and grabs 42 rebounds.

8. Fred Lynn, Red Sox, 1975. On his way to the AL MVP award, hits three home runs and drives in 10 runs in a June win.

9. Don Murdoch, New York Rangers, 1976: In fourth NHL game, scores five goals in the Rangers' 10-4 win at Minnesota.

10. Jason Jennings, Rockies, 2001. In first big league game, pitches a five-hit shutout and goes 3-for-5 with a home run (only pitcher since 1900 with a shutout and home run in his first game).

It was real close between Wood, Sayers, and AP imo.

My Cubby Chubby wouldn't allow me to pick any body other than Wood. That game was unreal. 298 yards rushing is impressive, but when you think about, there is no limit to the number of yardage a back can gain, while there are a finite number of Ks that can be recorded.

Good question FF, i think the section fits, its general disscussion talk. Although the Wood game was awesome, Jennings, did go 3 for 5 with a dong in his 1st game. That's impressive but there ars some good ones out there.

Yeah but it was the 1960's so they all had bad hairdo's.

Pretty cool list dare I ask how much time you spent gathering those stats,

I went with Magic because

1) it wasn't his normal position and
2) it directly correlated to a Title

why was he "replacing" Kareem, didn't he start the point from day 1?

Im pretty sure Kareem was hurt. I wish I could take credit for the list, basically just stole it from ESPN. And Frank is right, they snubbed Hester. I dont know if he has the best, but hes definitely in the team picture.

magic, great production playing a position that wasn't his own, on the nba's biggest stage.

a side note: dr. j. only made $500,000+ that year  current nba stars should get on their knees and thank god for MJ, Bird, and Magic

He just jumped center. He still ran the offense in that game.

I voted other

Dr. Kenneth Noisewater
His first year on this board was historic, and unlike the other "pussies" on that list, there is no "offseason" here.

Noisewater's rookie year was nothing close to the rookie year Happy Jason's having.

Magic's is the best because it involved the Finals.

Johnson's was definitely ahead of Lackeys, I only pointed it out because a few people have mentioned Magic's because it won a ring, but thats obviously not the only criteria since Lackey did too. Either way you cant really go wrong with any of these performances.

But one could argue that Magic's performance contributed more to the Lakers winning the title than Lackey's, which the voters apparently have.

Lackey threw 5 innings in that game. He was good, but it wasn't an epic performance by any stretch of the imagination.

I definitely agree. 4.38 ERA for the series too. Magic's performance was definitely better, my only point was there was more too it then winning a ring. That was one of the all time great performances in NBA history, rookie or not.

I did too. No one will ever put up those numbers in a game and he did it on a regular basis.

Me too.
