That might be best for everyone actually.
yeah i can actually see that here. JB is waiting for the salary cap to go up from either ~65ish-89ish or 165-189 or in other words the cap is significantly bigger so therefore a "max deal" aka "the full boat" will go up accordingly, so he doesnt want to be tied down to a 5yr/90mil "max" when he could have a 5yr/120mil "max" or whatever if he signed it in 2016-17. so jimmy butler, continuing to bet on himself and/or not getting permanently/injured, figures he can make a few decent bucks and then if he continues to improve from where he was last year he'll get a full boat when a full boat is a fuller boat.
the bulls, on the other hand, get to hedge their bets with JB. supposedly they offered him like 4/40 or 4/44 and 4/48 would have gotten it done? 5/90 won't get it done.... but if jimmy butler is a one year wonder and becomes a volume chucker like derrick rose (uh, that's DJ Volume Chucker the hottest club DJ in englewood to you, bucko!) shooting ~37% while going down to like 17.6pts and letting the defense slip a lil as he focuses more on offense, well then the bulls can let him walk for stupid-future-max paper when the time comes.
obviously the onyl way this totally backfires is if jimmy butler takes a few more steps and becomes a 30ppg dude and is renown as the best 2-way player in the league not named lebron james, or he's a slightly smaller lebron with a shot and then the bulls either manage to move rose on or he gets injured and goes away and this becomes jimmy butler's team and they get real close to a championship right when it's time for him to go to the new-CBA/cap full boat deal at which time the bulls are still saddled with 3-4 years of maxed out d-rose and they can't afford jimmy butler unless they're doing a 2 man show that features player-coach fred hoiberg giving them the business.
so yeah, for once i actually agree with all this "good for both sides" stuff unless the old d-rose supermax thingy screws them out of holding on to jimmy butler after the short-term deal when he goes for new-full-boat, and of course if at the time it's officially jimmy butler's team and all that. i really think this team DOES have to start becoming jimmy butler's team if it wants to go anywhere, and obviously that's a concern right now as i think him and derrick are starting to at least stare each other down on the "whose team is this?" tip because while derrick was hurt/ish early this year jimmy butler stepped up and made it his team and got them going at a pretty damn high level. then derrick came back and was kinda-sorta/spot-up-from-18ft derrick and after a few big games/moments he was like HEY NOW, SON, THIS IS MY TEAM! and to jimmy butler's credit he doesnt seem to wanna back down on the "i made this my team while you were fucking around with training wheels" front and you want that kind of alpha mentality in a full boat guy..... however since this technically was derrick's team like 5yrs ago when he was MVP and they got pimpslapped in the ECF and all that, man, it's going to be interesting to see what happens with this.... and in the end i hope we dont lose jimmy butler one way or another because newschool derrick "i shoot 2.5pt shots" rose is having an inferority complex in the wake of someone else stepping up and being willing to make the team their own. be the fucking POINT GUARD you're sxupposed to and distrobute shit, and if you get THE MAN on the team, it's your job to pass him the ball.... not to son him and make him #2. i
've alwasy said derrick rose is ideally the #3 or at least the #2 scoring option on a bonafide championship contender. we seem to have the latter right now provided jimmy butler backs up last year's performance.... and i'm worried that derrick can't handle this necessity and thus the bulls will be a 4th-8th seed until derrick goes to pasture one way or another. hey at least he'll feel physically alright when his kids graduate HS, eh?
