That has nothing to do with the conversation.

While I don't like them I understand their value and importance, one moreso than the other.

How many games went to OT this year? There is a reason it's only 5 minutes.

You want playoff style, 5-on-5, next goal wins?

You do realize these guys play back-to-back nights multiple times throughout the year? Or they play 3 games in 5 nights, like, a lot?

You don't mean this. I mean, you probably do, but then you don't actually realize this is a contact sport. Or something.

5 on 5 for the 1st OT period

4 on 4 for the 2nd OT period

Etc...

If you understand their value & importance, how do you not like them?

How is it possible to not like Patrick Kane?

You do realize that Crawford was the reason the Hawks won the Stanley Cup, right?

Do you know that there are some people that do not "like" Tom Brady?

But also a lot more open ice/room for error/creativity.

You can't have both ways, either more shootouts or more games decided on the ice without completely destroying players/teams.
They are NOT going back to ties, so, like I asked scorehead, do you have a better way?

This isn't an issue of rules, it's an issue of culture. You can give them all the space for creativity that they want but it won't amount to a pile of shit if coaches won't let players express that creativity. Players have been taught since they were five years old that the worst thing you can do is make a mistake, so never take the risky option when the safe option is there. I don't think that was ever more on display than when Canada won the gold medal by playing the most stifling conservative hockey anyone's seen in years. No player or coach is going to be the one to take the blame for an overtime loss that could have been a shootout win (or even shootout loss, which devalues the other team's win), so it'll just be the same short-shift dump-and-chase crap that made overtime so unwatchable before, just with two fewer skaters on the ice.

In terms of rule changes, I would move to straight wins and losses so that there's always an incentive to win a game outright and not play it so safe. Use ROWs as a tiebreaker in the standings, sure, but there must be death to the three-point game. Unfortunately, the glut of three-point games from the All-Star/Olympic break onward makes the standings races artificially interesting and makes bad teams appear mediocre to casual fans, so the NHL will never do this. Of course, I never thought the NHL would do three-on-three hockey, but now look, they would literally rather do that than show the world that the Dallas Stars actually have a losing record. I'd want ten minutes of four-on-four long-change overtime, too, but still, we need to overhaul the play-not-to-lose philosophy in ways that NHL rule changes won't do alone, and I don't know how we do it.

Also, any time you want to stop telling me I'm not a hockey fan will be about two weeks late.

Should be 3 points for regulation win, 2 points for OT win, 1 point for shootout win, 0 points if you lose the game in any of these ways.

I understand the need to balance the need of a winning team with not killing the players out there during the regular season. I'm fine with starting OT as 4-4 and can live with THEN moving to a 3-3.
Starting out the gate at 3-3 is stupid.

i say 4 minutes of 4 on 4... then 3 minutes of 3 on 3... and see how many games still go to a shootout.... if it's still too many then the next year just go 5 or 6 minutes of 3 on 3

Food for thought: have you ever watched sudden-death playoff overtime and said to yourself "man, this is so boring, so constricted, if only there were fewer skaters on the ice!"? No, probably not, because the approach is completely different. It's playing to win versus playing not to lose.

should be 5 on 5 next goal wins until someone scores. after 3 OT's and its still tied, then do a shootout.

I think that if there is a penalty in OT the team on the power play gets a player added so it's a 4 on 3

Probably right. There is never less than three skaters no matter how many penalties.

And what the hell do you do if there's a two-man advantage? Automatic penalty shot??

I barely could stand it when I presumed it would be a period of 4 on 4 before going to 3 on 3 ... going straight to that is just country dumb.

The only thing more 'gimmicky' than 3v3 hockey are shootouts, and that's by a (curious) hair.

That said, this is ONLY for regular season games.

There are no man-advantages in 3v3 hockey. Nobody plays with less than 3 players ever. Basically, though, they're hoping for 2v1 or 2v0 rushes to end the game.

You like the risk, mistake, creative, sometimes more aggressive approach?

I've explained why I'm not a huge fan of Crawfrowd's and Kane's (begrudgingly at times.) Nobody has to agree with me, I really don't care. I enjoy their success and don't enjoy their failures.

I think they should let every single player from both teams on the ice at once in OT. 20 on 20. Backup goalies too.
