Well, I ordered a breakfast sandwich but when I got back to the office there was no bread. I guess it was what they call a Breakfast Bowl. It had soft scrambled eggs, potatoes, and a choice of meat. I had pulled pork. They have about five or six sauces. I had Chicago. It was good. I assume if they had gotten the order right it would have been the same thing but on a biscuit or a croissant. Still, it was tasty enough that I'm not holding it against them.

I realized no one answered this, and I'm obviously biased, but you should check it out, shakes. It's pretty good. It's more a pub-style burger, as opposed to the thin griddle patties (I know you didn't care for Edzo's) Everything that can be done scratch is. The bread is baked in house, the meat is ground there (blend of choice chuck, smoked pork belly, and salt and pepper - that's it.), all the sauces, etc. Very respectable beer list for a burger joint (http://www.beermenus.com, both locations are on there) Its a 7-8 oz burger, whereas Kuma's is 10 or 14 oz I think. The location on Irving only holds 30-32 people, (it was basically a carryout pizza joint when they bought it.) There are 6 tables and some rail seating. There is usually a wait during peak times (Fri/Sat 5p-8p) and it feels crowded. The second location on Milwaukee is a bit larger, and laid out a little better, i.e. there are 2-top tables so 2 groups of 2 or 6 don't monopolize a lot of table space.

The big takeaway a lot of people have is the bread. There is something singular in the experience of eating a burger served on bread made that day. (Kevin Pang from the Trib wrote a nice piece about it here.) That, and, for a counter service operation, the service is very good. The Milwaukee location is also open for lunch. If you're still around Elston and Addison, you can shoot up Elston practically the whole way.

Oh, and we count The Affordable Dave Miska among our celebrity clientele.

I've heard good things about Leadbelly, but the combination of pork belly and ground chuck seems odd to me. Is it common for restaurants to use pork in their burgers?

Yea the bread looked really good on tv. I still live close by, gonna give it a little time to calm down after the Check Please buzz before going in. Probably go on a Saturday around 4 to beat the crowd.

Word is that Kuma's has gone downhill in the last year since they switched to pre-formed patties.

Finally got around to trying this place. Went Saturday after the wife got out of work. Place opens at 5, got there at 5:05 and every table was already full and there was a few parties in front of us waiting on a table. Granted, there are only 6 tables in the whole place. Anyway, an hour later we had our food.

My wife had the regular leadbelly burger (she panicked and couldn't make up her mind what to get amongst all the choices) and I had the buffalo wings style burger. The great thing about this place is that almost every type of burger has a french fry doppleganger so if you are having a tough time deciding which one to get you can get one as burger and one as a fry. I had the garlic, parmesan and olive oil fries and my wife had the betty fries which were covered in diced pork belly, friend onion strands and a homemade carolina mustard bbq sauce.

The star of the show were the sauces. I'm not a fan of carolina style bbq sauce, but if you told me that for the rest of my life every time I ordered BBQ it would come with this sauce I would be more than happy. It might've been the best bbq sauce I've ever had. so good. Worked well with the fries too. Mine wasn't as good. The top layer was great with all the fries being crispy and covered in cheese and garlic, but below that it was a soggy limp mess. I'm guessing the olive oil did that. Next time I am getting a different type of fry.

My burger came with bleu cheese crumbles, friend onion strings and a homemade wing sauce that was, just like the bbq sauce, the best wing sauce I've ever had. It was pink so it must've had some sort of cream element, but it was light too and delicious.

The burgers were good, but not melt in your mouth good like Kuma's. I think its the blend they use, chuck and pork belly, because the texture wasn't what I'm used to from a gourmet burger. Still tasted great, but as a stand alone burger patty I think it comes up a little short of the competition. The star of the burgers were the toppings.



The homemade bread was very good as expected.

Will definitely go back, but will get there a few minutes before it opens so we don't get stuck there an hour and a half.

Next time I'm gonna get the buffalo style fries and try a different burger since there are more than a few that sound really good. My wife plans to get the burger that has a crab cake on top of it next time. And I'm gonna see if they will let me order the carolina bbq sauce as a beverage.

"It is kind of sad," O'Brien said Tuesday. "We wanted to spread his legacy. We didn't want to profit from his name."

The name change will be the only thing different about the restaurant, which has locations in Portage Park and in Gladstone Park. Plans are in the works to open a third eatery this fall in Jefferson Park, O'Brien said.



"It will be a whole new concept," O'Brien said, declining to reveal more details or the location until plans are finalized.

The Portage Park restaurant, at 5739 W. Irving Park Road, was an instant hit when O'Brien and his wife Nicole Masse O'Brien opened it in March 2013 in an area of the Northwest Side with few trendy restaurants.

Its burgers were lauded by Chicago Magazine, the Chicago Reader and Chicagoist as some of the best in Chicago.

A second location in Gladstone Park at 5691 N. Milwaukee Ave. opened a year later — and caught the attention of the musician's estate, which asked O'Brien to pay royalties for the use of Ledbetter's nickname, for which the estate owns the trademark.

Tanya Singh, the executive director of the Leadbelly Foundation, said the O'Briens never asked the family for permission to use the musician's name, and refused to pay royalties for its use.

Terika Dean, Ledbetter's great-great niece and the administrator of his estate, did not respond to phone and email messages left Tuesday afternoon.

Ledbetter enjoyed a spurt of attention earlier this year, when the Smithsonian released a five-disc set designed to document his "monumental, sprawling career" and a tribute concert took place in April, according to the New York Times.

"We offered a settlement, but didn't hear back," O'Brien said. "Then six or seven months ago, we got another demand for royalties, and what they were asking for was excessive."

O'Brien said he countered with a "fair offer" to pay a yearly fee to use the name, but the estate rejected it.

"We felt strongly that they had no case," O'Brien said, adding that there could be no confusion between burgers and blues music. "But the legal fees were escalating."

Unwilling to take a chance in court, O'Brien said he reluctantly decided to change the restaurant's name.

"We didn't want to, but we had no choice," O'Brien said.

The menu items, which were named after Lead Belly's songs, won't be renamed, O'Brien said.

The walls of both eateries are covered with pictures of musicians like Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and the Beatles — all of whom were inspired by Ledbetter and, in some cases, covered his songs. Rock videos featuring music inspired by Leadbelly play on flat-screen televisions as diners unhinge their jaws to wolf down the massive burgers.

O'Brien said he and his wife considered changing the name to something else inspired by the music they love, but came up empty handed.

"We've got the trademark for BRGRbelly," O'Brien said. "We didn't want this to happen again."

Unless I am aware of all the other leadbelly ventures and booming fame around him that is growing, she should be begging for anyone to do this.

No doubt she , or the foundation, should be getting something and they cant use the image, likeness music for free, but this just stinks of someone having no business experience, calling a lawyer, who charged her a few thousand and she ended up with nothing, but selling T shirts and letting a legends name die out.

They could have set up something where they sell the t shirts and CD in the stores which would have increased profits several hundred percent. They could have incorporated his image into Leadbelly's insignia. Instead, they get nothing

You should have re named it Good Dolphin Bellys. I would have worked with you. My belly is well known in that area
