And the Johns trade goes from head scratcher to absolute trainwreck.

Stan got absolutely clowned on that trade with Dallas

I thought that trade was made in part to replace Oduya and get closer to being able to keep Kruger.

I know no one was expecting a good offseason, but...

Seems as if oduya waited quite a while to let Stan work but he is getting large offers.

I don't think the Hawks will win the Cup next year because of all the turnover, but I think they will have the talent and depth to be good next season and compete for the Cup the following season after they gel a bit. I think Daley will ultimately adequately replace Oduya.

With Garbutt in the fold, I assume they intend to dangle Shaw as a sweetener to any deal involving Versteeg or Bickell.

That's very ambitious. It's ya ha time on the defensive end with him.

Oduya wasn't some defensive whiz when he was brought in. He still isn't. However, solid leadership on the ice and on the bench upped Oduya's game. I expect it will do similarly for Daley.

Daley is awful & Johnny O is just a guy who was bad for most of the years but very good in the SCF. The Hawks core is intact & the guys they lost were lousy for most of last season. Don't over react to losing tier 3 & 4 bit role players.

Playing almost exclusively with Niklas Hjalmarsson, one of the franchise's best stay-at-home defensemen ever, certainly covered a multitude of sins for a guy who was unremarkable or worse in Jersey and Winnipeg, but let's not say that Oduya was "just a guy who was bad." That's dishonest.

I agree SH he wasn't a top tier guy, but when we are replacing guys all over the roster with players with lower ceilings, it's not good. I really think Stan thought JO would sign here for 2-3 more years and thus traded Johns.

michael Grosso @RumorBreak
#BREAKING Stars have a 2 year and 3 year offer on the table worth $4.5M per. Sabers have a 3 year worth $5M per for Oduya.

Not maybe the most reliable source, but I can't imagine Stan was offering him more than 3.25-3.5 ideally.

$5MM is a lot to pay for rings in the room. Buffalo can do better than that. Dallas probably can't.

If JO is worth 5, then Saad was worth 12.

JO was nothing special, and I'm with CH in that playing with Hammer made him look better than he really was. Not much of a puck handler, and more often than not, shied away from contact. It was only when things really, really, really mattered that he did anything more than average.

Bye bye, JO.

I am fairly sure we will be fine without #27. Daley with Hammer is good and the top two are no issue outside of injury. The rest of the kids can play their 5 minutes a game in the playoffs.

Quite honestly, I am excited to see how/if Q puts all these people together. Either Bickell or Shaw will still have to go for Versteeg and Kruger to stay but it will work out.

JO is not worth that kind of money...wow. Let him walk.

I'd still say Stan is 1-1 for the offseason. Saad was handled well. The Sharp trade, does NOT look so good. One more contract still has to go and it appears it won't be Crawford. I'm real curious which team would be willing to take on $4M for Bickell....I doubt we'd see much in return outside of cap relief for that contract.

For Bickell I think the places to look are teams struggling to make it to the salary floor.

Nice player. Not that hard to replace especially when you have to make tough choices with the cap.

I had always figured Colorado or Dallas for Oduya.

The other teams all know the position the Hawks are in and they're going to hammer them because they can. The problem with these deals is that the Hawks are getting rid of salaries but they're taking a bunch back too.

Yeah, I can't believe how much salary they are taking back. It really offsets the impact of dumping the high salaries.

Not really. They need to field a full roster. They might be taking salary back, but they are essentially trading one guy making a very high salary, for two or three guys making the same or less. By doing so, they are filling the roster.

If they just dumped salary, they would still need to take that money and pay free agents to come play for them.

Again, the Hawks have lost tier 3 & 4 guys who are just guys who are interchangable. Except for Saad. But dont be surprised if he isnt quite as good on the jackets without the Hawks great players around him...and dont be surprised if he doesnt score 20 goals. Sharp? Eh...he was bad this year.

I am looking forward to somewhat of a youth movement on the Hawks next year and Q having to play more youngsters. This team will be very very good again.

Lucky for Sharp and JO the Stars have the next Toews and Kane.

Quote:
Theoretically speaking, the Stars also believe they boast a young combo in 23-year-old center Tyler Seguin and 25-year-old winger Jamie Benn that remind of Blackhawks stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane early in their careers.
“We’re not there, but we think we’re on pace with where our players are at,” Nill told Yahoo Sports. “Benn and Seguin remind me of Toews and Kane when they were 22, 23, 24 years of age. And I think we’re trying to get there. We’re close, I think.”

One problem. They don't have their Keith.

They'll be a solid team next year but the team D is still bad.
