He's been GOBawful since being out with chronic fatigue in May. I'm wondering if he has some kind of other medical or mental issue going on.

Meth. Probably Meth. I hear they hand it out like 2% milk pints in the grammar schools in Missourah.

Wacha looked real good early then his stuff disappeared around the 4th. Is this something that's been happening to him or is this just a case of him losing his focus with a big lead?

Wacha has had a lot of games where he's cruising right along, then has a couple miscues behind him and a big inning ensues. Matheny also has a habit of not pulling him when the wheels have come off, most notably in the Sawx clincher a couple years ago. I don't know why he was out there still in the 5th, the dreaded pitcher win that MM loves

I don't understand Ralph's postings half of the time either, but I don't attribute that to Missouri

I do. If America was a human being Missouri is where you'd put the colonoscope.

Some folks down here speculate that it is some type of depression/mental stuff going on with Carpenter.

Definitely has not been himself. Yet the machine rolls on

Yadi beat the Sox last night with a stand-up triple. Let that sink in a minute.

Granted, where Avisail was playing was rather ridiculous, but nobody exactly expects Yadier F'ing Molina to slice a hard liner into the right field corner. He now has tripled in 2005, 2009, 2011, and 2015. That's one about every three years :drunken:

Holliday reinjures quad.

Will the Cards make a move at the trade deadline?

He tore the quad this time. Done for the season. Yes, I think they make a move, but not a big one.

depth. With all these late leads, Magic Mike has been working Rosenthal, Siegrist and Maness like rented mules. No idea when/if Walden or Belisle will make it back.

Wacha was an All-Star and he certainly has that ability; we just can't really describe a guy as a known quantity until he has a track record, Wacha has spent one year in the minors before this year and not even thrown 250 innings total as a pro.

Jennifer Langosch, over on MLB.com wrote:
Matheny wrote out his 86th different batting order on Wednesday, the team’s 107th game of the season. Some of the shuffling has been due to injury, as, for instance, the Cardinals never had intentions of trying out new three-hole hitters until Matt Holliday landed on the disabled list with a quad injury.

More of it, however, has come in an effort to jumpstart an offense averaging 3.96 runs per game.

"Every manager would probably like to go out and right eight names use it for 162 games," Matheny said on Wednesday, after changing his lineup for the 10th straight game. "That would make it really easy. But there are too many highs and lows through the season. I think there are different ways of looking at it.

"For us, it’s just that we don’t want to sit back and wait for something to happen. If we can proactively give a nudge here, or sometimes it’s giving a compliment to a guy who is really swinging the bat well, or give a challenge to a guy who is struggling. Just those little adjustments, at least, change the look of what is going on day to day, to where we’re not throwing it out there the same every day expecting different results."

After a three-month stretch batting in the second spot, Matt Carpenter recently returned to the leadoff spot, a place where he has thrived. He is likely to remain there, but look for continued adjustments behind him. Over the last seven games, Kolten Wong has hit as high as first and, on Wednesday, as low as eighth. Similarly, Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk have flip flopped between the second and eighth spots.

Heyward, who is now trying out a fit as a three-hole hitter, has started in every spot, one through eight. Grichuk has started games in seven different batting order positions and Wong in six different ones. The absence of consistency has been so pronounced that Yadier Molina actually leads the teams in starts from the fifth, sixth and seventh places in the order.

All sorts of factors play into the Matheny’s daily shuffle, from matchup concerns, to recent streaks, to spreading out his left-handed hitters. That has made the exercise much more fluid than formulaic, evidenced by the fact that Matheny has used only one lineup more than three times this season.

"You’re just trying to also put guys in spots where they might also have some success and see how it comes together as a group," Matheny said. "More so than anything else, it is just trying to figure out how to get guys in a spot where they’re going to be comfortable or get other guys who maybe have been in a good spot and are looking for that good feel at the plate."

Good seats still available!

The kid seems to have found something. He was known to have a few holes in his swing, but the Grit Check has 40 XBH, a somewhat ridiculous 18.1% HR/FB ratio, and playing a competent (and much more rangy than the Chief Justice) center field. I can't say even the most avid Grichuk supporters (and they are coming out of the woodwork now) expected the yute to accrue 3.0 fWAR in 273 plate appearances going into the campaign.

36 straight scoreless innings...but then again, they are playing the Brewers....so, not that impressive.

Best SP and bullpen ERA in baseball. Definitely a fluke.

Yadier Molina hit a triple and stole third base in the same game.

7 game lead :D

Moss walk-off.

40 games over .500, no big deal.

It's been a fun ride. Seems like it's a different guy every night. A good year to re-up the MLB.tv subscription. I seriously haven't watched this many games since i was about 12 and had nothing better to do.

I found this graph to be compelling, going into the season we knew this was an aging core. Waino going down, and Holliday and Adams being out most of the year... our development machine has provided a solid string of reinforcements.

man where did piscotty come from? i saw him go for $2500 in the sandlot league when he came up and i was like "who?" but then within a few weeks in regular leagues i did a last 14 days player listing and there he was well over .300 and he's been a nice little cog in a few of my fantasy machines since then.

is he just the latest 4-5 WAR player to come off of the cards' assembly line? this year you had grichuk kinda-emerging into a .275+/15/75/15 guy and hell i even heard earlier in this thread that taveras was a 4-5 WAR player (tho with a career -0.7 WAR i guess you get 5 when you die? =)

you lot just keep on coming like i cant think of anyone really going OMFG THIS CARDINAL PLAYER IS GOING OFF (pujols style) or even a big name super cy young candidate, but i'll be damned if you lot aint the best record in baseball. you lose "waino" this year and jaime garcia gets possssed to go out and pitch like cy young when hes actually out there. i think one of his more recent injuries must have had some side effects akin to the movie rookie of the year, so presumably one of his future injuries will take away his current god-mode pitching ability. cy la vie, no?

I think most people thought Piscotty would hit, though (SSS caveat) not for power, with the Stanford swing and all. He did make some changes to his swing plane, and was hitting the cover off the ball in the Grapefruit league, and continued that down in AAA. The guy that has really surprised me has been Grichuk. The eye test corroborates the limited batted-ball data (which is too incomplete to draw anything from as of yet) the kid just hits rockets. Whether Grit Check can continue to not walk is up for debate, his other skills make him a still useful MLB player, can play all three OF and is above average in CF, rocket arm, good speed and baserunning instincts.
