Here's a thought, maybe the clamp-down on the media is due to the Bears being a hell of a lot worse than anyone thought and they don't want season-ticket holders bailing in September. We all should be shorting Bears futures.

It's also the industry that takes advantage of providing proprietary information more than any other. They sell extra camera angles from games, provide salary and revenue data, have open practices for a whole month, and have reporters who work for the league dispensing information out. They also have Hard Knocks, NFL films, and the NFL draft and rookie combine.

That entitlement comes from the league. It is a well known NFL policy that they have shaped the league year to be in the news in some way in every single month of the year. If they wanted all these practices to exist in a bubble where Fox and Gase can put in the secret gameplan that will shock the league they could. Instead, they'd rather have these practices filled with the NFL equivalent of the townies from Hoosiers questioning why Kevin White is not out there.

Good points. When Trestman came aboard he was ahead of the league with his play-calling in the first season. Perhaps the Bears believe they will be able to exploit some edge in preparation with the media-black out in nothing being known about the team, since there's no tape on the new regime.

Bernstein spent half of today's show torching this particular strawman, and it drove me nuts (yarr). No one at Halas Hall thinks this is going to make the Bears better on the field; it's just a way of managing the flow of information and preventing that great bugaboo of modern NFL coaches: the dread DISTRACTIONS. Ridiculous, but not harmful. The problem is that everyone's laboring under this delusion that media and fans are entitled to a level of proprietary information that would be laughable in any other industry. This is precisely why Bernstein's arguments against this policy are so flaccid. How does this make the Bears better? How does it make them worse? We're not talking about national security, here--it's just football! Great, then John Fox isn't compelled by some moral imperative to ensure that Zach Zaidman's mash notes are more detailed.

Let's play a little game. Think about the sneering disdain and utter lack of professionalism with which Dan Bernstein comports himself on a daily basis. Think about your average Bears Monday caller speculating as to how many touchdowns LeBron would score if he played tight end. Now tell me with a straight face that either of these two people are entitled to know where Pernell McPhee is lining up.

I just see this needless training camp coverage as part of the elaborate dance between teams and media. The Score furnishes hours upon hours of Bears training camp talk through the summer, which keeps the Bears top-of-mind while the Cubs and White Sox are playing actual games and trying to make the postseason, which ultimately helps the Bears (and hurts those of us *wave* who don't give a fuck about the Bears anymore). Are people entitled to know what players are doing? No, probably not, but talking about entitlement and proprietary information doesn't feel right when the practices are open to the public anyway. So people, if they don't mind the schlep down to Kankakee's weird twin brother, can watch practice for themselves and find out where Pernell McPhee is lining up, but Zach Zaidman can't tell everyone else about it? It'd be like seeing a Steely Dan tribute band for free in a public park and then when someone asks you if they played "Aja," you say you can't tell them because the ASCAP foot soldiers will have you killed. I know it's annoying when Dan gets all huffy about the rights of the media (just imagine if beat reporters were told about this 30 minutes late and couldn't pick up their kids from school!), but this is just the kind of Maginot Line that the modern NFL would institute: a perfunctory nod to weird coaches and their obsession with secret Football Information, while hordes of bloated dopes in bootleg Urlacher jerseys see everything they're doing anyway.

No other industry invites fans and media to watch what goes on in the office.

Don't do an out of town training camp and just do private practices. Problem solved.

This is basically how I feel (I may have oversold my position the other day--don't drink and post, kids). I just find myself bristling more at the media's collective sense of self-importance than at the NFL's. It's exhausting hearing blowhards like Bernstein and Spiegel tell us the policy is a.) harmful, because Brad Biggs' dispatches are a matter of life and death, but also b.) stupid, because lol this isn't a matter of life and death, it's just football, why does John Fox even care.

It's harmful to them in the sense that they have to fill a day with Bears talk to meet the demands of a market expecting year-round Bears talk. Somehow, this is necessary, while no one is lighting up the phones demanding Cubs/Sox talk in early February.

If the Bears wanted to hunker down in Lake Forest and hold training camp closed to fans and media, that would be fine by me, absolutely terrific, a winning situation for every party involved. But setting up this whole weird pseudo-carnival in Bourbonnais and treating it as top-secret while expecting your media partners to fan the flames of all things Bears makes no sense. I mean, Christ, if you don't want Zach Zaidman to give away all your secrets, just ask him nicely! As if he's going to break a story? He couldn't break a vase with a baseball bat.

Year round Bears talk is one of the worst things about Chicago sports radio. I don't care about them until the first game. The fact they they still occupy a major chunk of programming February through training camp is crazy over saturation.

I think if John Fox had his druthers, this is exactly what he'd do. It's not his fault or his problem that the Score spends 80% of baseball season talking Bears.

That's actually not true. I heard Fox the other day talking about it. He said at Carolina they went away for camp. In Denver they just did camp at their facility. He said he prefers going away.
