New restaurant opening in a few weeks by my guy, "Sandwich King" Jeff Mauro from Food Network. Sample his stuff this weekend at the Bucktown Art Fest.

Why the SK hate, Big? You two cross paths unpleasant like?

I don't know him personally but I really enjoy his show.

Dont like tossing around the name "SANDWICH KING" when you dont have a place making sandwiches. never met him, didnt know he had a show.

...and I guess he didnt even have a place? So why is he the Sandwich king?

 His show on Food Network is called Sandwich King. Not sure if he had any say so in that. His sandwich recipes are actually pretty good and tries to keep it all as local as he can. Food Network probably owns the SK name? Not sure how he came up with Pork & Mindy's...

Gonna say someone has used Sandwich king before this guy...and he dure doent seem that connected if he didnt have a place before this?

Good to see he ruined Bagels and lox. iTs the first recipe I saw when I googled his recipes....and very few seem to be Samwiches....and they all seem to be a huge pain the ass, not sure who is making them at home.

Let me add my final touch. Pork and Mindy??? Playing off 70's sitcoms names that maybe 10% of your customer base knows about. Big open, soon to close!

From Crains:

Food Network personality Jeff Mauro ("The Kitchen," "Sandwich King") plans to open his first restaurant late this year in Bucktown.

Pork & Mindy's, as the restaurant will be called, will feature a "diverse and approachable menu" created by Mauro, who's from Elmwood Park, and co-founder Kevin Corsello, who's from Wheaton. Pork & Mindy's will serve slow-smoked pork, pulled-chicken, pulled-lamb and other sandwiches, sides, desserts and nonalcoholic beverages.

The 2,500-square-foot space will be at 1623 N. Milwaukee Ave. The 40-seat fast-casual restaurant will incorporate charred wood and concrete, along with works from local artists. The company plans to open additional Pork & Mindy's restaurants throughout the country in 2016.

The Chicago-based company recently launched a line of sauces it's selling in local Mariano's.

The Sandwich King crossed him by not naming his new food dispensary 'The Sandwich King.'

I tried out the Italian Beef spot he recommended out in Cicero (Scatchell's - 22nd St just east of Cicero) and aside from getting a bland sandwich, I was almost disgusted by the "recommended" giardinera that was nothing more than celery salad, oil and a few red pepper flakes.

I'll pass.

I think he had breakfast spot called JAM. His dad was partners with Ted Mazola in some clouted up real estate deals. The kid made some quick dough on sweet condo deals in Univesity Village. I'm sure dolphin could tell us more about it.

Pulled pork, chicken and lamb? Sounds like BarbQ to me?

When I saw his recipes, everything just looked like a pain in the ass..

Yes, Seacrest....having a 1 hr and 55 minutes production time for Bagels and Lox is fucking it up.

Seems like everything he made has some garnish that needs 5 hours of prep and pickling.

If I need to explain to you what a SAMWICH should be, you dont know. Whatever he called it.."gradual and casual" dining, and he plans on opneing them across the country? I have heard that story a thousand times. Why doesnt he wait until this one closes before he opens the next one.

Because we all know the demand will be out the door for people looking for "pulled chicken and lamb " sammies! Anyone want to guess a price on a celeb sammie?

Have had the Joe Maddon sammie. Needed some oil and vinegar, some spices, etc. Would eat it again at Wrigley.

I will go to the opening of the second one....and dont bother me with the reviews of the VIP "Opening"...I will be at Bari!!!!

I thought I recognized the name. The dad's name is Gus Mauro. Ted Mazola was the first ward alderman towards the end of the days when first ward alderman had an implication of being a "friend of ours." Mazola found that the job of alderman didn't pay nearly as much as real estate developer on the emerging near west side and so, moved on from the job. He didn't have problems finding financing for his work and there were never any labor problems.

There were a lot of kids of politicians/wealthy/connected who made a lot of money buying up the "low income" units of the UV project. They were low income because they were in college or on their first jobs. Then bought at below market, found the money to upgrade the units to match those at market and then sold at market. Someone reported on it about a decade ago. Typically, the report didn't go deep enough and drew no outrage.

That was the scam in the early days of mixed income projects. The only requirement was that you live in the unit for a year or so before selling at whatever amount you wanted. A lot of young people made a lot of money. Luis Gutierrez was a fan of this move. His cousin became the alderman of his district. He had a "ward low income housing bank" where he required at least one unit of EVERY development be placed in it, with management entirely at the discretion of the bank. Another equally unqualified family member was president of the bank. I can only guess what happened to those units.
