The hit on McCown which gave the Bears their THIRD set of downs from the 1 yard line was not a penalty. It was just a hard hit. If that is going to get flagged that might as well have the QBs wear red jerseys every game. It benefitted my tea, but it was still a lousy penalty.

Here's one I've never understood. If it's 1st and 10 and there is an offsides penalty, it becomes 1st and 5. Why wouldn't they just give the offense the yardage and make them start fresh with 1st and 10, as with every other penalty? If the defense commits another offsides, it doesn't go to 1st and zero, does it?

Because the other penalties are usually 10-15 yds so they result in a first down.

The ground can't cause a fumble. Why not? Hold on to the ball.

I hate the 15 yard unintentional facemask. 15 yards for touching the kicker. stupid. 15 yards for grabbing a jersey up near the neck. extremely lax intentional grounding rule.

I think it's funny that people make fun of baseball managers for wearing full uniforms, but no one has the same ire for football coaches who dress like they're about to spend their Sunday afternoon hosing leaves out of the gutters, or worse, going to the airport. At least there's a precedent and good reason for managers wearing uniforms: they're usually out there for batting practice and warmups, and would look even more incongruous stepping on the field in civilian attire. Football coaches in stupid Reebok polo shirts with high-performance armpit fabric or whatever is just another NFL cash grab.

This isn't about dumb rules per se, but I saw an article and video of "The Catch" (1982 NFC Championship game), which marked the end of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty and the beginning of the 49er's dominance. What I didn't remember about that game, was that after The Catch, the Cowboys, down 28-27, still had about a minute to drive down for a game winning field goal.

On the first play after the kickoff, Danny White threw a perfect pass into triple coverage to hit Drew Pearson in stride at midfield. Eric Wright made a game-saving horse-collar tackle to pull Pearson down at the SF 44. Today that would have been a 15-yard penalty and put Dallas in FG range.

On the next play, White was pressured, started to throw and then stopped, then fumbled the ball to the 49ers...basically the same "Tuck Rule" play that saved New England years later. (Interesting trivia: a 4-yd old Tom Brady, who was born in California, attended the game.)

The other thing I found interesting was that Bill Walsh said he thought Montana was throwing the ball away and had begun looking at his chart to plan the 4th down play. Only after the crowd erupted did he realize the ball had been caught. Some people believe Montana was trying to throw it away, but he has never admitted it.

Apparently you are not allowed to beat your wife or girlfriend anymore.

I wonder how this would work in Michael Sam's case.

Your entire body must be over the line of scrimmage when throwing a pass for a penalty to be called.

The illegal hands to the face penalty is horrible. I think there's been at least 6 of them in the Steelers/Colts game.

Insufferable.

Allowing a fair catch on a kickoff. Should be punts only.

Nope.

Rams/Seahawks game involved a fair catch on an onside kick. Seemed ridiculous to me.

Ah. That's different. I didn't see that.
I agree teams should not be allowed to fair catch onside kicks.

Isn't an onside kick typically driven into the ground for a hop?

How do you fair catch something that's already hit the ground?

The kicker didn't drive it into the ground.

Jeff Triplett originally thought he did and called a penalty. He was then corrected.

So they did the kick lob thing?

Fair catch is a smart play then.

No it actually looked like a typical onside kick.

But the kicker just kicked it weird.

I'm confused.
Was it a bad NFL rule, or a bad call by a ref??

I still haven't seen it.

Receiver called for fair catch.

Referee was going to call a penalty because you can't fair catch a ball that's touched the ground.

Officials conferred and determined (and replays confirmed) that the ball did not touch the ground before the fair catch signal.

So stupid rule to allow fair catch on kickoffs, and almost stupid referee.

On the same play one team could have committed 2 personal foul penalties and the other 1. The result is they offset each other. :?

I really don't like how o lineman can jump when they see a defender jump and actually get the call if he was in the neutral zone. I would just lineup a foot short of the line and jump but not cross the neutral zone until they got enough false starts called to stop them from reaction jumping.
