Why are we debating QB options? The Bears are 0-3 and clearly one of the three worst teams in the NFL. Why the hell would anyone want them to go get another QB, or, worse yet, give something up for another QB? I hope they go 0-16 and get the first pick.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Theories:

1. Fans view this as their escape and selfishly don't want their weekly Sunday enjoyment to be a guaranteed 3 hour shit-show
2. Fans are mostly stupid
3. Fans are still pissed off about the 2011 NFC title game
4. Fans irrationally/wrongly view the rest of the league as this dynamic QB-getting turnstile, like teams just go through elite QB after elite QB, whereas the Bears have Cutler (see #3)
5. Fans something-something 85 Bears
6. All of the above

I'll go with option #1

I'd like to see my favorite team come out of this funk and win some games.

8 losses in a row (going back to last year)? Is Abe Gibron still coaching?

If there was an elite franchise QB next year in the draft, I'd be all for tanking the whole season.

But, there isn't. In truth, it's a pretty shitty draft and you're probably just as likely to get somebody decent at 5-7 as higher. Given that, I'd rather see the Bears win a couple games since I plan on watching them. At best, they'll likely be a 5-6 win team depending on Cutler's health.

The other thing is, even if they do tank, do you guys have any confidence that Pace can draft NFL talent? So far its not going great.

I think you are looking at this wrong. If you spend your whole time waiting for Andrew Luck to show up you will almost certainly be just good enough to miss him when he does show up, and you may need to wait a long time just to get that chance.

It's all about the number of chances you get. You take a chance on a quarterback in the first round and cross your fingers with the highest percentage you can get to find a franchise quarterback. If he succeeds, then you are set for a decade or more. If he fails, then you try again. The position is that important.

Mariota was doubted by a ton of people, and was even passed on by a team desperate for a good quarterback. I'm guessing you'd trade him straight up for Cutler right now.

Yeah, I mean, it's just personal preference, so I'm not disagreeing... I just will never be able to enjoy watching my sports team knowing that they have no shot of even making the postseason (in any sport). I guess if you can sort of compartmentalize that and enjoy a single game for what it is, more power to you. I will watch the Bears the rest of the year, but mainly as background noise and to hear Sam Rosen mispronounce people's names. They will bring me no type of actual joy.

Sure I would but there is no Mariota in next year's draft.

If your plan is to just keep drafting 1st round QBs until one hits, I don't think that's a workable plan. Certainly not one worth tanking a whole season so you can overdraft Connor Cook #1 overall when you can get somebody a couple picks later if you're that hot to pick a QB.

Football is awesome, and this is the best possible result for the Bears.

It's all bad, none of this matters. The NFL owners should have an emergency meeting to vote out the McCaskys as owners and force them to sell. This shit is beyond fucking embarrassing and they are a disgrace to the sheild.

I'm on maximum rustle at this point.

The point is that Mariota was getting bashed the same as all these guys are now. College QB scouting is a battle to find every single flaw possible and act like it means they can't play in the NFL. Mariota's weak arm and quiet demeanor meant he wasn't going to make it. Winston's attitude means he wasn't going to make it.

There is great value in getting your pick of quarterback in any given draft but in the extreme case of wanting a quarterback but not having one be that high on your list you just happen to get the best player in the whole draft or you trade down and fill in a few holes.

What exactly is the downside here to having a higher pick in the draft? Even if you don't want them to get Connor Cook, you should want them to get the best possible player.

when I see Tyrod Taylor looking like a more than competent QB in the NFL, I'm not sure what an good QB prospect is supposed to look like

The only downside is to spend an entire season watching them suck to the high heavens to get a marginally better player in a shitty draft.

I don't have that many years left. I plan to watch all the games. I'd prefer to get a few hours of entertainment out of the deal, given with 13 games left, I'm going to spend 2 solid days watching this team.

I don't begrudge anybody who's good with tanking for the best pick. I'm not going to give the #1 pick back if we get it. I'd be fired up. I'm just answering the original question.

The problem is that the Bears upper management doesn't seem to understand anything but getting beaten over the head with obvious facts before they do anything about it.

I know this is an extreme hypothetical here, but imagine last year the Bears go 1-15, decide that Jay Cutler isn't the future and they save the cap space for 2016, and draft Mariota(or Winston). We are looking at this year being a one year rebuilding year with a chance to be decent by next year or even this year if they win the qb lottery and they don't suck.

There are Cutler fans attempting a monday morning victory lap over Claussen's performance.

Cutler is still a bad quarterback who will never win anything and never would have under any circumstances.

Celebrating that he's better than Claussen is sad and pathetic (also shallow and pedantic)

You certainly can say Cutler is overpaid, not elite or average. Looking at a lot of other QB's in this league andwatching Clausen's performance you cannot call Cutler bad.

I heard Mac on Pappy's show yesterday discounting bringing in Tebow because "31 other teams have passed on him".

I'm not going to bother to look but I'll bet 31 other teams also would pass on Clausen. It's a horrible argument.

Tebow may suck. But, Clausen isn't any better. Tebow would have been able to at least run the ball a bit yesterday.

But why? That's sort of my point - everyone who is saying Tebow is just picking his name because he's a recognizable person. So, you think Claussen sucks... may as well go find a QB who might someday be a decent NFL QB and can actually throw a football. No team is ever winning anything with Tim Tebow... not only because he sucks but because he sucks so badly at the one thing a QB does (throwing) that he would never actually have a shot at being good. He just happens to also run well and has a recognizable name so people keep bringing him up. Fales would be a better choice than Tebow because Fales at least has a minimal chance at someday being a real NFL QB (because he can throw a football).

Average = Bad in the NFL with QB's being the most important position.

Well, Tebow wasn't better than Thad Lewis, so Tebow may not be better than Clausen.

Agreed. I wonder if Fox is even going to let Fales play, though. I'm thinking not.

I don't think there are any arms out there that might someday be a decent NFL QB. So, for entertainment purposes, I'd rather watch Tebow.

I was talking to a cousin once way back when the Bears were dead four or five weeks into the season during the memorable Henry Burris/Krenzel/Quinn era. Everything sucked about the team, just like it does now, which is why I found her Bears love at the time so puzzling. Here was a person who not only braved freezing temps to attend two Bears game with one of those horrid QBs starting, but lived and died with every skipped throw, fumble, and punt. She would tell me how frustrated she was with both losses as I politely nodded while thinking she was the biggest dumbass in the world for investing any energy at all into a season that was clearly over before it even started. But I guess that's just a different type of fan, the day to day, small picture sort of fan. Maybe even the traditional/throw back fan? I think to ask "why even care" about this season, as I do as well, betrays a different outlook on fandom. A more big picture, long term outlook that diminishes day to day accomplishments (such as any wins this season, presumably) so as long as they are not perceived to be impacting the big picture in any kind of effective way. I'll still hold on to my big picture perspective, but I'll concede that the fan following the day to day stuff is probably having more fun overall.

Going 2-14 only to reach like crazy and pick Cook/Goff #1 overall is fucking dumb, but exactly what will happen. I'd rather them pick in the 3-6 range and get a defender (or another pre-injured WR we don't need.)

Seriously though, in 5 years were all going to look back and realize the Bears have become the Browns. They are worse than an expansion team and have absolutely no prospects for the future at all. Long is being a little exposed as overrated and maybe out of position and he's the one guy (maybe Jeffery) on the 53 man who will be on a roster in 5 years. A fucking guard trying to play tackle is what the Bears carry over to the next era.

Fox had a great point during his presser.

Great punt protection yesterday.
