The Hawks have 5 guys (Hossa, Kane, Toews, Keith and now Seabrook) signed to deals past 2020 (I think). Will these guys even play that long? No complaints, given the success of this team, but will the Hawks be horrible after this dynasty runs it's course with all this money tied up or are there ways around any of this money (cap expanding, etc?)?

I'm a hockey novice.

Not unthinkable St. Louis finishes sixth in the division this year.

Of the five you mentioned, I see Seabrook being the first to fall off, actually. Toews, Keith, and Hossa are conditioning freaks. They're built to last. Kane, who knows if he even stays in town through his contract. I don't think the Hawks will be horrible, but there will be teams with better cap situations.

Since they will have this money on the books in 2020-2021, what % of the overall cap do you think that will end up being (obviously, you don't know what the cap would be 5-6 years down the road, but assuming it expands somewhat) spent on this core? It would seem nearly impossible to me for a team with aging stars, even if a few of them are still solid, to be more than average unless they are complementing the next group of young talent at that point. Do they have a young core of players and where do their minor leagues rank overall?

Again, just asking, certainly not going to be criticizing how this team manages itself given it's success.

Can't gaze that far into the future when there's reportedly no telling how much the Canadian dollar is going to freefall in the coming years.

Blues will be very mediocre this year...and Hitch finally gets fired.

I'm feeling that too. Tarasenko taking a huge leap will balance the loss of Oshie, but Hitchcock seems like he's in the dreaded fourth act of a three-act play here. I know last year they brought in Kirk Muller as kind of an in-case-of-coach-meltdown-break-glass guy, but didn't break the glass. I'm utterly shocked that they kept Hitchcock this summer with McLellan, DeBoer, and Bylsma all on the market. I wouldn't call any of the three spectacular, but Hitch wore out his welcome.

Paille's gone. He must be completely out of gas to be less valuable than Ryan Garbutt. For Christ's sake, the guy's name is a portmanteau of "garbage" and "butt."

I like Seabrook, but geez that sure seems like a big chunk of the salary cap for a lot of years.

That contract is good for the next four years, but once he hits 35 it's going to look really ugly.

As we approach this season, the 3rd pairing scares me as we are going to be stuck with an older/slower Rozsival and Rundbad as 6/7 on the blue line.

1/2 of the 2nd pairing should put equal fear in you.

I've seen way too much talk and concern about the third pairing when the Hawks pretty much proved last season that it doesn't matter come playoff time.

Going to miss Saad.

Sure but in one way or another his numbers have been replaced.

Numbers are overrated. Saad is a big black stud.

Dano might be sick though.

How will they survive an extended playoff run without his big body that produced zero goals last year ?

Hawks waive Bickell and send notably Dano and Hartman to Rockford because Quenneville.

The Dano move will certainly be temporary...maybe Cap related?

Fingers and toes crossed that some drunk GM takes Bickell.

He was making $815k-something so it wasn't about the cap. I think it's because:

1. He's young
2. He's not had a strong past couple games
3. Something-something defense something-something veteran grit
4. Q

I am thinking they are trying to trade Bickell and then keep Baun on the team. This buys them time to trade the dead ass.

well shit...i guess they just kicked his ass out the door on waivers so idk what the hell they are doing sending him down. When he is off the roster then they have 12 forwards so someone has to come back and not dress.

I'm not really sweating the Dano assignment. He's waiver-exempt and two-way, so he'll probably be back up very shortly after distinguishing himself at Rockford. I don't think Q is an evil idiot. Who's to say this was even his call?

Maybe Q was really really volcanically angry with him.

Now deadass has cleared waivers and q says he is staying with the team. What the hell did this accomplish? I would have at least buried him in Rockford until he decided to take off his skirt and play physical again.

I'm not as upset about Dano going to Rockford as I thought I would be. It looks like they are giving him the treatment this year they gave to TT last year. He's only 20 and he'll be back sometime this year, and what is most important is that he will be on the roster come April. If Dano can come up and put up a playoff performance similar to Teuvo, I would be very happy and would call that a successful 1st season with the Hawks. They are making him earn his spot, and don't worry, he will earn it and when he does he's here to stay.

Seems like the modus operandi is that you need to earn your spot in Rockford, but you have to earn it fast. Has anyone seen Mark McNeill?
