John Fox and Adam Gase couldn't win with a HOF QB, so what pray tell are they going to do with a shitty QB like Cutler?

I agree that the problem comes from the top down but you cannot bank on them selling the team. I'd be happy with getting rid of Sweaty Teddy and reorganizing the management structure

Where does that start though? Once again firing everyone from Philips downward? I need specifics to know that we're not going down some wayward dumbass road that involves hiring the 85 Bears.

If the Bears were smart, they'd set up an organizational structure like the Packers.

One guy, in charge, who doesn't have to listen to all the idiots who own the team, and can do whatever he wants.

But what if that man is an idiot? Al Davis and Jerry Jones are what you want?

Those are owners and before they got old they were pretty good.

Owners hire a main guy who then does everything else with little to no input from the owners besides a decision to hire or fire that person.

If they do that I won't say they'll necessarily create a disaster, but I don't think their criteria (which is, presumably, someone easy to get along with) will lead to the best person being hired.

The idea would be that this person would basically operate with autonomy, which means as long as they aren't massive jerks, that the ownership could deal with them just fine.

Gotcha, so you want a chain of command that goes:

Aloof, vegetative owner that is not named McCaskey

Badass owner dude who takes no shit and is god of football

Head Coach who may or may not be John Fox

I think that precludes the best candidate from being hired. Rex Ryan is a damn good coach, but he probably wasn't considered by ownership because of his reputation. I think that standard also applies to hiring a GM, and presumably the GM's football boss if such a position were created. I think that's dumb. Hire the best person even if he's a prick.

Pretty much but the McCaskeys can continue to own it as long as they delegate all football decisions outside the family besides the hiring/firing of that guy.

So basically no hope is possible so long as the McCaskey family owns the team, which will be indefinite since they've begun a chain of inheritance which will never be broken, rendering pleasure gleaned from this franchise void forever.

They aren't good at being involved in football decisions but hopefully they figure that out at some point.

I have to believe that the directive to always think they can win came directly from the top. Then you get the moves now which are trying to restack the chairs on the Titanic. But then Cutler will come back, they'll win 4 or 5 games and convince themselves "Well, if Cutler stays healthy, and we make a few signings, and Kevin White comes back as an elite WR, and Shea continues his supposed improvement then we can win this year!"

The obvious move is to limit Phillips' oversight to business and hire another executive at the same level as Phillips to run all football operations, and who reports to the same folks as Phillips. That they haven't done so must mean they have some sort of business reason for keeping Phillips in place to run both business and football stuff. Not sure what that is but others might be able to speculate more credibly than I can.

The Cubs current model is ideal. Let the doofus run the business side (Kenney=Phillips) and have his sole interaction with the football side be one powerpoint slide showing that year's budget for football operations. The president/gm/czar of football is able to do essentially whatever he wants.

Yup, and I'm sure many other franchises are run the same way. The Bulls have a similar thing going on I believe. It's not rocket science, so I'm just real curious as to why the Bears don't do things the same way. Do they not want to upset the current hierarchy structure, or does Phillips have a say/role in preventing such a division of duties from occurring? Is it as minor as not wanting to have another executive salary on the books?
