There's a place in Chinatown on 22nd Place and Wentworth that sells cheap, high-quality Italian beefs.

Gigio's/Mama Nitti's on Oakton and White has a great beef sandwich.

I prefer Johnnie's to Jay's.

Gigio's at main and McCormick? I'm glad you said that. I like that one too. That place is fucking packed all the time.

That's Dengeo's. Are you fucking with me? It is definitely always crowded. I've never had an Italian Beef there. I'm not sure they sell one, but I would guess they do. I would never think to order it at a place like that though. My wife will usually order fish there and then complain about it. Look, Dengeo's/Hub's/Grecian Delight, you order ribs, chicken, gyros, or burgers. But if you tell me they have a good beef, I'll try it.

Their beef is not good....I used to eat there a lot back when I fixed copiers...Skokie was in my territory...the beef was like rubber.

Fast forward 15 years and I'm working in Wheeling...go to the BG Dengeos one day and forgot I hated the beef....still bad.

My go to there are the chicken kabobs...pretty tasty...they have a really good tzatziki

Hmm. Must have caught them on a good day. Not rubbery or grey or puckered. Not too thick, but not scraps. Good gardiniera, nothing earth-shattering, which is what you want.

Do you like Al's giardiniera? It's a lot different from most, pretty much just celery, oil, and crushed red pepper flake. It kind of grew on me after awhile. There's a place on Taylor near Western, I think it may be called Lu-Lu's, that has a great giardiniera in a very light pickle. They have the same or similar stuff down the street at Bacci.

Love is not too strong a word for how I feel about Portillo's Beef and Cheddar Croissant with hot Giardiniera.

Does it qualify?

Man, I am apt to eat anything placed in front of me, but that sounds a little much in the grease dept. I'd eat it and regret it later.

You'd best have 2 then and really make it worthwhile...It's very easy to do. Love their fries alongside...hot and well done.

I really like Al's giardinara.

I love Johnnie's sweet peppers. I don't see anyone who makes them like johnnies, where they are diced and marinated

My son started requesting "Chicago" food be shipped to the wilds of Mizzou about a month ago. No beefs, crappy pizza, limited Mexican. To hear him tell it, he's dying. It's probably part of the reason I get regular updates on grades. $$ and the hope I'll send him at least some Johnnie's in bulk.

Missouri may be the worst culinary state in the country, outside of KC bbq.

The greatest thing ever to come from St. Louis is Panera. Think that one through.

Deadspin had a great article on how all the St. Louis famous foods were accidents. Uh, upon further review it was Jezebel, but whatever...

He didn't walk on, but he's working out with many of the team members & (I think) occasionally in front of the coaches. He's trying to eat everything in sight & finally working out in earnest. He claims his velo is rising again (which I don't doubt), but I'm more interested in his control (& a more consistent release). My guess is that when his two LL teammates who committed (c/o 2020) come down this month, he'll find himself around the park even more often. It didn't hurt that he's in a jock dorm directly across from the entire athletic complex.

I think taking a break after state playoffs helped him see it as big fun again. He & I argued baseball for an hour+ on Sunday night.

Thanks, I may have to give them a call & see if they ship. Shipping perishable food seems like one helluva pain.

I don't disagree about KC/St. Louis & the state. But when I first went to Columbia, I was stunned at the flood of national chain places there. It was like Schaumburg on steroids. Mall/Chain/Mall/School/Chain/Mall/Expressway. The three local restaurants I hit were ok, but nothing I'd remotely consider here.

Oddly, there were no chains of KC BBQ places there that I could find. I figured in the state capital there'd be one or two. With the local places being disappointing, I didn't dare try the BBQ.

That's good he's still getting after it and being in that dorm will give him plenty of motivation. They lost some arms this year and are going to lose a few more next year so I bet they will be looking for some help. Tell him to keep working hard. You never know what will happen.

Thanks. When I tell him it's coming from you, he'll be a little more ready to run, run, and run some more.

Ha. Running is good but a weighted balls program is better. He should NOT throw them at any distance. That's dangerous. Tell him to hold the weighted balls in different positions of his arm swing. That strengthens the smaller muscles in the arm and shoulder. It really works.

I was on a business trip with a guy once in NYC... it was time for lunch, and I asked him what he was in the mood for. He said, "Well, since we are in New York City, I want to get an authentic Italian beef!" Absolutely no sarcasm. Had to let him down gently that it was a Chicago thing. We ended up eating in a Bed Bath and Beyond.
