The Cardinals have not fared as well against lefties as right handers. However, Wood has struggled against the Cardinals, so.......NO. However, I can see Richard going into a game to pitch multiple innings in relief if it's called for.

OR he could announce Wood as the starter, pull him after one batter, bring in Hendriks to face the probable RH line-up.. It's an old trick former Sox manager,Paul richards pulled.

Someone on B&B suggested that Maddon might try something like that tonight...have Denorfia listed as pitcher, bat him near the top of the order so he would bat in the 1st inning, then have him throw one pitch in the bottom of the 1st and be replaced by Arrieta. Too crazy even for Joe.

Now that is one I never heard before! Pretty cool idea.

If Lester can go out and get game 1 I'll almost forgive his meh regular season. Then with Arrietta going in 3, all they would have to do is sneak an average start in there by one of the other goofs. Gotta get game 1 though.

5:30pm start time for game 1? Meh.

Quote:
Game 1 is Friday, Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in St. louis at Busch Stadium.

Game 2 is Saturday, Oct. 11 at 4:30 p.m., also in St. Louis.

Game 3 brings the series to Wrigley Field on Monday, Oct. 12. The time has not yet been announced.

If a Game 4 is needed, that game will also be at The Friendly Confines on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

If a Game 5 is needed, it will played on Thursday, Oct. 15 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Lester and Hendricks (probably) are the only ones set up. Arrieta pitches game 3 if they are tied at 1-1 or down 0-2. But in the unlikely event they take a 2-0 lead, it would make sense to give Arrieta the extra day to rest with the possibility Hammel wins game 3 and they could start arrieta in game 1 of the NLCS.

Are you nuts? When it's time,he pitches!

Maybe save him for next year

It is a little over the top, but there some truth in there too. He knew he was beat sitting in the dugout down 1-0 while his team batted in the first. And this is why a pitcher's W/L record still means something. He knew who he was facing and how sharp that guy has been. He had to put up zeros as long as he could. He couldn't even get an out before a run crossed the plate. He lost that game. Arrieta won it.

Cole looked like a little bitch in the dugout after the first inning. Looked like he was crying. He's not #chicagotough.

I say Hendricks.

Hammel because he has better stuff when he is on. You just have to hope he is one of those players that plays better during the playoffs.

I agree with the sentiment JORR, although posting such an article an hour after game time is a little knee-jerky.

I suspect he isn't a beat, but one of those stir-up-meatballs type columnists. Either that or misery really plays in the Pittsburgh media

Are you really headed down there? I am so tempted, but I already had taken Monday off for Columbus Day and may just "invest" in tickets.

Im sure there are a good amount of hall of famers who were outpitched at some point during the playoffs

He's 24 and 40-20 and his other two post season starts were good. Its more than a little over the top to react like he's terrible or a lost cause.

Thought about going to game 3, and then I saw the ticket prices. No thanks.

It's very tricky when lefties throw right handed. No one expects it.

Lackey vs Lester for Game 1. Cubs have trouble with finesse pitchers and have done nothing vs Lackey this year. Smart move by the Cardinals. Fuckers.

Does Schwarber switch back to LF or is he permantely our RF for the remainder of the season?

Will Coghlan be in the lineup against Lackey and will Soler play at all in this series?

At home, I'd expect him to be in LF as he's comfortable there, and in LA from what I recall RF can be a bitch for 5pm starts. But I can see him playing some RF in St. Louis and NY, I would think that it depends on the spray charts of the opposing hitters.

I'm shocked to see that the lines I'm seeing for the series are basically even money with a couple that actually favor the Cubs. Seems odd, considering Arrieta isn't available until game three and the Cubs are coming to Busch with little rest.

Might just be Cubs fans throwing all their money at the Cubs too. :D

Being favored gives me heartburn.

If they can beat Lackey in Game 1 then they will win this series.

Agree it gives them a much better shot. It goes without saying that game 1 is important, but it is extra important here since Arrieta isn't slotted until game 3 and there is such a dropoff in the rotation after Lester.

Lester and Arrieta both better get ready to have their arms destroyed if the Cubs manage to keep winning.
