Alright!!!

After last night's win, Theo must have told Ricketts to cough up the 6M and to his credit, Ricketts approved the deal.

Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 60 | Run: 70 | Arm: 60 | Field: 60

Think a young Andruw Jones. That's how some scouts have described the 20-year-old center fielder from Cuba. Evaluators like his body -- described as solid and compact -- and his athleticism. But there's a lot more to like.

In the batter's box, Martinez has a quick and compact power stroke. He's shown the ability to hit home runs to all fields and work the counts. He's speedy out of the box and shows base-stealing potential. Described as "hard-nosed," Martinez is aggressive and not afraid to take an extra-base.

Martinez has shown good instincts on defense and the ability to cover the gaps in the outfield. Those skills combined with a playable and accurate arm make scouts believe he will stay in center field and could be in the big leagues in after a couple of seasons in the Minor Leagues. Scouts also like that Martinez has experience playing for Cuba's junior national teams in Mexico and Venezuela and that he spent two seasons with Las Tunas in Cuba's Serie Nacional, the island's top league.

Martinez, who was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball in May, is eligible to sign. However, it is unclear if he will sign during the current international signing period or wait until the next period that begins on July 2. He is currently training in the Dominican Republic.

That's how you build an organization. Keep adding talent.

This kid may be a bust, he may be a 4th outfielder, or he may be someone knocking on the door for the CF job in 2017.

Fuck yea.

More like insurance in the event Almora doesn't turn out to be as great as many believe he will be. Nice to have 2 great prospects they can look to, to take over the position in the near future. Fowler is not likely to be coming back.

Almora seems injury prone. They've drafted a couple CF's lately too in the upper rounds.

The more candidates the better plus more trade chips.

I doubt they offer Fowler more than 2 years and probably just the qualifying offer to get the draft pick.

Those scouting grades are pretty good. You'd think someone like that would get more than $3M.

why do you need to sign a CF when right now dexter fowler is 2nd in playoffs MVP voting behind jake arrieta? SIGN HIM UP THEO! CF will be covered for the next 5-8 years!

Look at his first half here. Look at his career numbers. He is a pretty good player who has had a real nice 2nd half. They want to improve on pretty good. If Martinez is a Andruw Jones-like player, that's a nice upgrade.

+1

Strange comments coming from a guy whose team got demoralized and humiliated by the "can't miss prospects" last night.

Not saying this guy will be anywhere near the talent those guys were.....but I'm guessing the market on Cubans gets a little cheaper considering recent political events.

Oh no my friend, the days of worrying about Felix Pie's twisted testicle are over. We actually have good talent evaluators in the the talent evaluating positions.

Good Times. Good Times.

yeah dude, obviously.... idk if you detected the jest in my post but i assure you that it was there.

and lol this 3mil international kid is already an andruw jones in CF? well then * claps hands * i'm certainly glad that the cubs already have a young andruw jones in their system and at the very least we can look forward to having the best defensive CF of his generation (if not the 2-3 around his / including his) no matter what happens.... and for a 3mil signing bonus? god bless the plan!

maybe next year they can go spend another 2-4mil signing the next clayton kershaw and we'll be really set! since we know that price is purposely grooving some pitches in the playoffs to lower his value so the cubs can sign him to reunite with his guy joe maddon then once we've got the next kershaw along with arrieta and lester and price and hendricks (who you figure should at least be some kind of scherzer cuz IIRC he's already ahead of where scherzer was at this point in his career) then we'll be looking pretty good, espcially with the next andruw jones in center!

Sure, why not... Stick him at Myrtle Beach for 50 games and reassess, by that time they'll have an inkling of how Almora is doing at AAA.

The 2015 South Bend team was pretty mediocre in general (nobody had more than 9 HR), and nobody who played CF at South Bend last year really distinguished themselves other than Ian Happ's brief appearance. So bringing in international talent to beef up the 2016 Myrtle Beach class makes a lot of sense.

Dude, that's the skills COMP. It doesn't literally mean he will be the next Andruw Jones. When people make fun of Cubs fans, it's because of thoughts like this.

The point is what I have said long ago. Cub prospect destined for HOF Sox prospect stupid move. Taking a flyer on a 3M Cuban is newsworthy? If Hahn did this everyone would mark it as a desperate move. WYC.
