Here is Yadi trying to blow up Addison a few weeks ago. At least Addison could see him even though he began his slide after he was already at 2B.

If Utley was just making a "smart" play, then the rule needs to be changed. Going full blast into a guy with no intention of even trying for the bag ruins the spirit of the game for me. Why don't we just allow guys running to first to tackle the first baseman when he's trying to catch the throw?

I agree 100%.

What makes this even worse for me is that it comes from a fellow 2nd basemen. Utley of all people should know just how vulnerable a position one could find themselves in while trying to turn two.

And for the record, anyone who had a problem with Coghlan's slide into Kang, I'm right there with you. Plays like that shouldn't be allowed. Major props to Heyward for his slide into second last night.

It was a dirty play. You can't wait that long to start your slide.

I mean you can drop kick the 2nd baseman and still be able to touch second base (not that you'd bother). Good baseball play!

Let me say I'm not specifically bashing Utley, it's just a play that needs to be fixed.

I'm fine with the play. It was a freak injury and Utley could have hurt himself too. You play the game to win (especially in the playoffs) and sometimes it causes you to play in gray areas.

I don't understand the concept that the offender possibly hurting himself excludes dirty from the play. Utley maybe getting hurt (or faking it whatever) doesn't mean that the play wasn't dirty. If both players can get hurt on the play that kinda makes it... dirty

It was a good playoff play. He wasn't trying to hurt him. He was trying to prevent a double play. A dirty play is when a guy intentionally tries to injury someone else.

I think you may need a new prescription.

One of these days, a SS is going to get good and pissed on one of these plays and, instead of throwing to first, is just going to fire the ball into the runner's collarbone.

I think you may need a new prescription.

I don't think so. He went hard, never went for the bag, never touched it in fact, broke someones leg... that's a bit more than trying to break up a play. It was pretty unnecessary anyway that was gonna be a tough play to make as it was. You don't need to barrel roll the guy not even attempting to make it to the bag.

It was going to be a tough play but he doesn't know that. It looked like his leg got stuck in the dirt and that's why it was broken. The contact didn't appear to be excessive to me. Just a difference of opinion I guess.

A long time 2nd baseman didn't know that was going to be a very tough play and didn't know the dangers of a slide like that?
Not buying it.

I'd be a hypocrite for calling out Utley because I've always felt that if there's a dumb rule and you take advantage of it, good for you. But from everything I'm hearing, it's questionable as to whether this actually was legal since he didn't touch the bag. Combine that with the fact that he didn't really even slide and basically just drilled Tejada while standing straight up, and I at least find it highly questionable.

MLB is a real douchebag, though, for the replay ruling (either because it's a dumb rule or they didn't enforce the rule correctly).

It's at least given me a rooting interest, though, because I'll be cheering for the Mets.

Most Cubs fans were probably quietly doing that anyway.

If it ever happened to Jeter they would have changed the rule immediately.

They do it all the time in regular season. It's hardly a playoff play.

Suspended 2 games it appears. That pretty much says it all. MLB feels he was out of line. I kinda wanted to see him drilled high and tight with a heater though.

I agree with this.
Repeat "offender" and this way they prevent and actual murder from happening on the field tomorrow.

Can you appeal during the post season?

I would think he can, it's in the CBA.
But I'd guess it would be an "expedited" appeal because it's the playoffs, maybe get reduced to a game.

Coughlin's knee hunting "slide" was far worse.

If they're acknowledging he broke a rule, why the hell wasn't it enforced during the game?

While not touching a base?

Right, instead they not only didn't erase the double play; they also gave Utley second because the guy with a broken leg wasn't able to tag him after he overran the bag. What a clusterfuck.
