Why, no matter what sport, do announcers (and many fans) rarely understand how replay works?

There is a very key component to replay that is rarely mentioned: there has to be visual evidence to overturn the call on the field. The umpires are not reviewing the play to make a decision regarding, say, out or safe from a blank slate. They are reviewing only to see if there is evidence to overturn the call on the field. This is a huge distinction. Yet, time and time again, we have to listen to announcers say shit like "it's almost too close to tell, but I think he's out" after the call on the field is safe. If it's too close to tell, he's safe, numb nuts. Take a class.

I don't really see this problem with football fans or announcers. I can't honestly say if it's a problem with baseball fans and announcers. Football announcers, even the dumbfuck ones, routinely point that distinction out while they are waiting for the outcome of the review. Besides, baseball shouldn't even have replay.

Baseball announcers definitely worse, which is what prompted the thread, but I occasionally hear it in football too. And I hear it from fans in both.

Let me start with you forgot that they claim to require INDISPUTABLE video evidence to oveturn a call.

I have asked people who should know what that means. They also dont have answer.

Some have told me that INDISPUTABLE means at least 2 camera angles showing the play should be overturned.

Thus even if you see if clear as day on one camera, if they dont have a second view, they wont change the call. I am not telling you that it is the absolute rule, but seems to be a pretty good guideline to use.

This is something that would help define it for the fans, coaches, owners, players, etc.

They seem very reluctant to reveal how they make these determinations, who makes them, who reviews it, what camera angles they use, etc.

I know MLB built a second replay studio this offseason to help expedite this issue.

TBS, and Pedro specifically, took MLB to task Saturday after the Utley play for this reason. I was surprised and impressed. They were basically complaining that some faceless, nameless person made the decision to allow Utley back on second, and we will never know who it is or be able to ask them why they made the decision.

This is philosophical, but my personal opinion is that sports- baseball in particular- shouldn't be worshiping the "god of perfection". Mistakes are part of the game. Of course, we should try to get things right, but at what expense? Everyone is constantly complaining that games take too long (which to me is sort of like complaining that sex took too long), but here we go and add another layer with a bunch of guys standing around so some goof in New York can watch a replay. And even when that doesn't happen you have the managers fucking around so their own replay guy has a chance to see if a challenge is worthwhile.

It's really just not that important. It's a fucking game. No, I don't want the White Sox to lose on an obviously bad call, but I'd prefer that to the game losing its soul with robot umpires and constant replay analysis.
