Lackey vs Hammel. Don't even watch, the Cubs have no chance. That means the Cards have to put some bum out there vs Lester in Game 5 so we have a chance to win this series.

I like these late afternoon games. Gives me enough time to run a few errands and make it home for first pitch. I also don't have to stay up
real late. I realize if they make it to the NLCS I will need to make some adjustments.

Cards probably start Wainwright or Garcia in Game 5. I'd be surprised if Matheny gives the ball to Lynn in a win or go home situation. The Cubs would put a 4 spot up before any of the Cards had a chance to adjust their jock.

Hopefully Lackey starting on 3 days rest makes him suck.

Wrigley going to play big today. I would think that favors St Loo but the Cub are way overdue to slap Lackeys underbite around. Lets just hope its decent Hammel and not car fire Hammel.

I'm not sure who it helps...probably the Cardinals. But that lineup yesterday has pop up and down the order...guys capable of hitting it out in any conditions. I'm hoping that same lineup is out there today (or similar, with Addy being a maybe.)

Do not put Castro at short though. If Addison is out, put Baez back in there. I know the defense was shaky, but one of those two plays was very tough. And he had 2 hits.

Isn't Lackey supposed to be awful on short rest?

2-0, 1.69 ERA in postseason. 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in those four starts overall.

According to Baseball-reference.com and a quick game log sort for post-season contests, Lackey has started in the post-season on three days rest following a previous start on two occasions.

The first three day rest for Lackey came in Game 7 of the 2002 World Series when Lackey was a member of the L.A. Angels (or whatever they were called then.) Lackey picked up the victory, pitching five innings while allowing four hits, a walk and one earned run. He threw 86 pitches just three days after hurling 95. Lackey was just 23 at the time.

Then, in 2005, Lackey pitched on three days rest again for the Angels in the ALDS. Gaining a no-decision, Lackey went 5.2 innings, allowed just two hits, but walked four hitters while allowing just one earned run as the Angels lost the game after Lackey left the contest. Lackey threw 78 pitches, just three days after throwing 98 pitches in Game 2 of the series. Lackey was 26 at the time.

Now, Lackey is 36 and will try to do something he has not done in 10 years when he takes the hill late on Tuesday afternoon at Wrigley Field to try and help the Cardinals survive and push the NLDS to a fifth and deciding game at Busch Series.

It should be pointed out that this go-around, Lackey threw less pitches then his previous forays on short-rest, tossing only 86 pitches in his Game 1 gem on Friday night.

Some will remember 2013, when Lackey pitched in relief before starting the clinching Game 6. While the relief appearance was two days after his Game 2 start and his Game 6 start was two days after that relief appearance, the only two times Lackey has truly had back-to-back appearances on three days rest in the post-season were in 2002 and 2005.

Many are thrilled with this decision by Matheny to go with his veteran, but I am a skeptical.

Lackey is a bulldog and I certainly love his attitude. He has been here before.

But what can we really expect from Lackey other than about five innings? You have to figure that the Cardinals will still need to rely heavily on a bullpen that was every bit as bad as starter Michael Wacha was in Game 3. Kevin Siegrist, Seth Maness, Adam Wainwright and Jonathan Broxton all pitched in relief in Game 3 and all allowed at least one earned run themselves. All will need to be sharp because all will likely be called on since Lackey will be going on just three days.

It should be noted, that the last time the St. Louis Cardinals had a 36 year old pitch on three days rest it happened on October 28, 2001. Of course, the man that took the bump that night was none other than Chris Carpenter, who grunted himself through six innings and to the franchise’s eleventh World Series championship.

Lackey looks like a guy who craps his pants in a bad college-hijinks movie.

Lackey isn't a fastball pitcher, he will be fine. We need Hammel to pitch masterful performance. Yea...

2nd Half Hammel on normal rest is terrifying.

I have more faith in Wood and Cahill

Lackey without the strike zone that he had Friday night is going to get lit up today.

Cubs win

Anyone want to catch the game around the Arlington Heights area? Kirkwood and I may be going out to watch it if we are good little worker bees today.

i don't think the cubs will come out and shit the bed and get no-hit for 5+ innings today, whether or not it's 3 days rest or whatever. i think they caught some adversity in game 1 and were fortunate to amass a quick comeback/lead in game 2 in order to get back to the frontrunning position they're used to (see: second half of the season)

that said, shit, sitting outside here at 52 degrees it seems like yesterday was the day to go to the game. yeah i'm going to the fox bowl in a month or so but it's not like it's gonna be 77 the day b4 so it feels like it's 30 out here.

cubs should prolly win this because they're a better baseball team than the cardinals. if i liked holliday at all i'd say it's painful to watch him out there and that's your #3 hitter! seriously go build your lineup around piscotty today!

I may go out for the game, but probably closer to home. Let me know where you guys land, but I suspect you're talking Fox & Hound. BR will not allow me to go there.

Dumb.

The team won the Arietta game; Arietta had a horrible day (4 ER = horrible  ) and the rest of the team picked him up. That should be very encouraging for dolts that apparently needed a reminder that this squad isn't built on the back of some fragile image of one 'perfect' pitcher ... rather, it's a team that wins games as a team more often than not. Or maybe Arietta started 97 games this year; I forget.

It looks like Molina is down. I don't like our chances to advance any further.

There is literally no way that the Cubs do not win today.

4-0 Cubs.

Have to assume he is not likely to go deep in the game. But will Hammel pitch like he did in the last start of the regular season and most starts in the first half, or struggle as he did so often in the 2nd half? If he struggles, Lackey could just go 5-6 and hand it over to the bullpen. Having faced Lackey so recently, I would hope the hitters will do better against him today.

The Cardinals record in games without Molina in the lineup is not good. If he doesn't play, that is a significant factor.

I've only created one Cubs Game/Series thread this season and that was the series at home against the Phillies.

Gonna be freezing. I'm expecting low scoring, nail biting for at least 6-7 innings.

glad to see that maddon didn't overreact to the defensive issues and sticks with baez at short, cuz i think going forward getting his bat going could have a soler-esque effect on the lineup as opposed to trying to condemn the guy for defense.

and yeah, hopefully soler has entrenched himself in RF for the rest of these playoffs cuz i think some other idiots like me have been saying for a good portion of the year that the lineup is a different animal when soler is in there.

I don't know if Coghlan bumslayed his way to .250 this year but every time I saw him play he sucked.
