First base defense mattered there

Yeah, but that's an illustration of exactly why it doesn't matter (or rather, isn't worth talking about). Hosmer is the best in the business and he botched the play in a big moment. It was a play that Jose Abreu or Frank Thomas makes about 98 out of 100 times and a play that Hosmer makes 99 out of 100. The chance of it actually meaning anything within in the context of a game on those occasions they don't make the play is remote to say the least. And it ended up meaning nothing last night.

But I'm sure the Royals are gonna win this thing on the back of elite management and elite first base defense!
