Well I was one of the apparent few that wanted the Red Sox to win in 86. Couple that with them being a Cub rival for decades is why I don't particularly like them. Faster they go away the better.

They certainly function well as a team, and they're showing you that elite defense can be important in a low run-scoring environment. But if you look at them on paper, there's no way you would think they could be this good. If I told you at any time a team was going to win a World Series with Salvador Perez as its best player, you'd find the notion ridiculous.

I know Hawk was mocked earlier this season for saying something like he wouldn't trade the Sox players for the Royals. And while that's just some crazy over-the-top Hawk talk, there's a little truth in there. There's no radical difference between the Royals and White Sox outfields. Yeah, the Royals are a little better defensively on the corners. Escobar or Ramirez? Whatever. If Hosmer was my first baseman I'd be trying to replace him with more power ASAP. Moustakas had a big year, but he's really just been a Gordon Beckham up until this season and I expect him to return to his poor hitting ways soon. The gap between the Royals and Sox at third and catcher is just enormous. But I find it difficult to believe that that is the difference between a World Series dominator and the brutal White Sox. I suppose a lot of the difference lies in the bullpen.

But forget about Hawk and the Sox. Let's look at the Cubs. Outside of Wade Davis, Perez and maybe- maybe- Cain, which Cub would you trade for a Royal? This is just a team that is truly somehow greater than the sum of its parts. They were there last year too, so it's clearly not a fluke, but I just don't see it. It's like they're winning with smoke and mirrors.

But yes, their strength is in bullpen and lineup depth. Alex Rios bats 9th.

Also, the low scoring environment you mentioned is perfect for their strengths (bullpen, defense, base running, putting bat on ball)

Also, when a pitcher lives on his ability to strike guys out, Royals are a nightmare

I almost said Cain, but Perez is probably the best catcher in baseball. I can make a case for Eaton- and maybe Fowler, though that's stretching things- over Cain. He had a pretty good year, but he's a 106 career OPS+ guy. Anyway, it's not like Eaton is what I'd call an elite centerfielder and he's more productive offensively than Cain. And that's kind of my point. The Royals are winning with a lineup full of White Sox-like turds. In fact, Rios once was a White Sox turd himself.

And yeah, they put the ball in play. Good things happen when you put balls in play. There's that pesky fact of a .300 average on all of them across time. But that's not modern baseball. You're supposed to take a lot of pitches before usually striking out or occasionally walking.
