Exactly.

They are great at this and it is free. It takes about one minute online.

You must have missed the part where I said "daily service". That means they would continue to receive mail daily.

I disagree. They should put a mail carrier on every street corner in Chicago.

not in the sense that it is acceptable to pay for stamps...but paying more to get mail everyday, when that's the whole principle of the post office (neither rain, nor snow etc), that's no gouda.

Yes. Charge a fee to the folks who are stuck in the 1960's & still want mail delivery daily.
95% of mail goes straight in the recycling bin. Think of the environment!

Good luck with that one. If you think any business or indidvidual is going to pay for a service that has been free forever, you are nuts. Remember the "no mail on Saturday" idea? That really took off, didn't it?

The postal service is an out of date antiquated system with tremendous overhead & operating costs that needs to be retooled & rightsized. The US Postal Service lost $5.5 billion in 2014. I guess thats not enough for anyone to worry about though.

As conservatives, we want a more fiscally conservative & responsible government.

Thankfully USPS hasn't been run by the government in decades.

The government doesn't fund or have any hand in day to day operations of the postal service.

Scorehead wrote:
The US Postal Service lost $5.5 billion in 2014.

"Since 2006, the Post Office has been legally required to pre-fund health benefits for future retirees at a cost of around $5.5 billion a year. For the fiscal year so far (October 2014-February 2015), the Postal Service has a $1.401 billion operating profit (see ‘Controllable Operating Income (Loss)’ line in the report linked here). This result, for the first 5 months of this fiscal year, exceeds the $1.374 billion operating profit for the entire fiscal 2014 year (see pg. 14 of the 2014 10-K attached here).

Through February, total mail volume is up 0.5 percent and total mail revenue is up 3 percent compared to the same time last year. First-Class Mail revenue is up 3 percent, and First-Class Mail volume is down only -0.7 percent compared to last year. Standard Mail revenue is up 4.5 percent and Standard Mail volume is up 1.4 percent compared to last year. Shipping & Package revenue is up 8.5 percent and volume is up 12 percent compared to last year.

For the month of February 2015, the Postal Service had a $76 million operating profit, down slightly from the results for the same month last year, but a higher result than planned."

Also, package totals are forecast to be up 20% this Christmas.

Scorehead, I like you but you might want to sit this one out.

So you would like business to pay a premium for getting their mail on a daily basis?

Chet.....if you are gone for weeks at a time, put your mail on hold and have them deliver it when you get back or go in and pick it up when you return.

I think mail could be daily delivery, but with people like me paying the premium for more customized services to make up for the revenue they're getting from the junk mail people. It would still shift some carrier jobs to other types of jobs, which would piss off the carrier's union.

I do put my mail on hold, but I'd be literally doing it every week. One time, I got sick and didn't get there in time and they sent it all back. And why should I tell the entire fucking USPS when I'm going to be away, just because they want to deliver all sorts of unaddressed junk mail to me mixed in with the addressed mail?

And, when I've done back to back 28 day holds before, I've been told that I'm not supposed to do that.

I've gone through a full 30-day hold's worth of mail before. The stuff that was actually appropriate to be sending to me, that is to say things that I requested businesses to send to me, or things like greeting cards... a full month's worth easily fits into my mailbox. So what the hell do I have to be the one to adapt just because Granny doesn't know how to use a computer and wants to know that "the Jewels" is selling green peppers for $0.79/pound this week?

What I'm probably going to do is get a PO Box and then do "snowbird" forwarding for 90-days to the PO Box, and then wait a week and do a 21-day hold at home, wait a week and then do another 90-days to the PO Box, etc. That way i can keep giving my home address to the companies/agencies that insist on a residence (American Express, for instance) and to my friends and family. Since the unaddressed mail won't forward, i can easily get two weeks into a 12x4x16 PO Box.

But I'd rather pay $15/month and just not get the crap delivered to me in the first place, and get a nice bundle dropped off every week that I can throw in my briefcase and go through on my next flight. Unfortunately, I don't have any nieces or nephews who live nearby who I could just pay to do that for me.

"The US Postal Service sucks" has been a huge anti government spending meme forever, it's hard for some people to give it up.

There's no way the post office delivering six days a week is going away. Let's say you trim it to three days a week. What will NBA players open up before games? No mail to open could lead to Angry Black Man. Angry Black Men who could be armed (gasp!). In turn, go off on the staff for not having any mail, maybe even threaten them. And these threats are not relayed to the media who happen to be at the facility that day, even though they witness it and refuse to report it (hypothetically, of course). Do you realize how catastrophic this would be? Really Smart Lawyers would have a field day. Mail ain't goin' nowhere, champ.
