I'd think the Midwest would be all about the casserole while the Plains would be breadlier. Other than that, all the regions make sense, especially the amended map with Missouri and meth.

Why would you need mac and cheese if you already have stuffing and potatoes? I guess the same could be said of rolls but the roll is a necessity for Dinner II of the day.

I have never seen mashed potatoes (or any non-sweet potato) or green bean casserole on any Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Not my family's, the wife's family or former gfs' families.

I'd actually never seen actual green bean casserole until this last week when I made some out of curiosity.

Bored curiosity. I bought the stuff for it whilst absolutely stone sober.

The wife laughed, especially when my garbage disposal of a son didn't want to try any.

It's really not that bad.

I usually add some garlic to it, and a whole lot of those fried onions..

Is that because you and your family have another standard go to for the day?

So did I. So much so that I had to admit to myself that I couldn't call it a vegetable dish.

No mashed potatos? Fuuuuck!

Gravy becomes irrelevant at that point and I ain't never putting gravy in the corner.

Also, mask potatoes are the cement to the turkey, gravy, stuffing and mashed potato sandwich the next day

I hate gravy so much. Lousy brown sludge.

Put me down for no green bean casserole but how do you not have mashed potatoes? Crazy.

I'm getting kinda irritated with my aunt that used to host. I'd be really irritated if I cared.

What's a good dessert alternative to pie? I hate pie and pumpkin.

Right on, GD and RPB.

I could not imagine having Thanksgiving without mashed potatoes.

And Pumpkin pie kicks ass.

What about pecan pie? That one takes me to a happy place.

Pecan Pie is a little too rich for me after eating a big dinner. Maybe a little later at night.

Pecan Pie is my go to choice as well, but I agree it can be a bit heavy after a big meal like Thanksgiving.

This thread just inspired me to make baked mac and cheese to bring to the festivities.

this is what we do:
appetizer: pirogi's, polish rye bread, crackers, cheese, salami.

dinner:
turkey, duck, mashed potato, green bean casserole, rolls/biscuits, corn, sweet potato, cranberries (canned and frozen), home made stuffing (w/ onions!).

pies:
pumpkin, apple, pecan, and then a 4th...this year it's chocolate cream.

with copious amounts of wine and beer.

My friend Karl likes to host Thanksgiving for his family every year so he can do things exactly the way he wants. I have to admit his pumpkin pie is the best I've ever had. Anyway, a few years back his sister-in-law wanted to host it instead. Karl became quite disgruntled and kept whining to his wife: "Stephanie has no fucking clue how to host Thanksgiving. I bet she won't even have cranberry sauce." His wife told him everything would be fine. Karl said he would reluctantly attend but he was bringing his own can of cranberries in his pocket and if there were none he was going to pull it out. Sure enough, Thanksgiving dinner at Stephanie's and no cranberry sauce. Karl pulled the can out of his pocket and said, "Hey Steph, could I get a can opener?"

When I told my wife that story she said, "Your friend is such a fucking asshole."
