Congratulations.

Hard to believe that they are the first CPS team to win a state football title.

I watched most of the game. They were perfect in nearly every way. That was one team with one goal and did they ever accomplish it. They no sold their accomplishments during the game until it ended.

Is that true? First CPS ever? Can't be.

Are you serious? It's on 39th Street. Probably the second greatest football player ever to come out of Chicago was from there.

I'm serious. I'm not a big HS sports guy. Didn't grow up in the city.

Well coached and made their turnaround through a combination of hiring an assistant with ties to one of the better youth leagues in the city and 8 transfers in the lineup.

You are absolutely right. I'm a proud Phillips alum. He has an excellent feeder program and he has utilized the transfer game pretty effectively.

About 5 yrs ago a few of the guys that grew up with made reference to the job that he was doing. They told me that the team was going to be good. I thought they were out of there mind.

It is a great story. There hasn't been a lot to cheer about in the neighborhood over the yrs and the community and alumni have come out in droves to support the team.

My ex gym teacher Carl Bonner was one of the more celebrated coaches in the public league during his time at Phillips. It's good to see that the new coach has helped restart a program that he helped create many yrs ago.

I'm pretty sure they didn't even have a football team for at least a few years there. I think this new program is only about five years old. Phillips has a pretty good football tradition if you go far back enough though. Buddy Young might be the fastest guy who ever came out of Chicago. I'm gonna argue that he's the second greatest football player to ever come out of the city behind Butkus. When I was a kid my old man had a third place ribbon for the 100 yard dash that he won when he was in high school at Lane in the 40s. I don't know what happened to it. You move, shit gets lost. Anyway, the two guys that finished in front of him were both from Phillips, Buddy Young and Ransom Thomas.

Still, I think of Phillips as a basketball school. That was a great team that beat Bloom in '75. Darius Clemons was on there but he was young and not really a main guy. I think a guy named Larry Williams did most of the scoring. And they had Robert Byrd who went on to be an absolute lockdown defender on some of those good Marquette teams.

My guy Paris's uncle was on the 75 team. Herb Brown was the coach. Bonner put out good football teams. He coached Chris Hinton who will forever be remembered as the guy that was, traded for Elway. He was a helluva player in his own right.

They had teams over the years but they were not really good.

I think for awhile they were playing 8 on 8 football.

From the Book of Knowledge:

"Success in the state playoffs for the Public League has been fleeting at times, but since elementary football came on board in the late 1990s, the league has seen considerable progress in competing with outside competition. Between 1979 - when the League first gained entry into the state playoffs - and 1983, at least one Chicago Public school earned a state semifinal berth, with Robeson making it all the way to the Class 6A championship in 1982 before losing to (Rockford) Guilford. Since 1983, only three schools have made it to the state semifinals: Morgan Park (2005), Hubbard (2000, 2006) and Simeon (2014). On November 27, 2015, Phillips became the first Chicago Public school to win an Illinois state title with a 51-7 win over Belleville Althoff to win the Class 4A state championship."

Only won by 44 points, huh? At what point do you stop trying to score in HS football, never?

IIRC that team had no more than 15 players at any one during the season. Damned remarkable.
