Alright guys and galdings, it's time to talk about the real reason for the season (unless you're from wisconsin where i've heard rumors that if you get far enough backwoods they sell the shit all year 'round) --- EGG NOG.

as my poopy stain in tonights hawks thread might have indicated, i've been doing some of that pre-fabbed alcoholic "holiday nog" garbage that isn't that great in terms of alcohol and definitely isn't that good in terms of eggnog, but when you sit down and polish off the two bottles of it that you had sitting around cuz you gotta do it sometime, i guess it gets you there. otherwise, i wanna talk about the real shit and not the goofy alcoholic hybrids that are out there.

as a kid growing up i was raised on the low-fat dean's egg nog to the point where if i had full egg nog it was just disgusting and wrong. eventually i grew up and started having full-blast egg nog and now i can't go back to the lowfat shit. Dean's is my default brand, as it's essentially the median/standard from which i measure all other egg nog to be good or bad. for the most part that's just what i fuck with cuz it's not too expensive and it's always around at jewel and i know what i'm going to get.

personally, i think the southern comfort egg nog is the best stuff out there. i guess you COULD argue that the oberweis glass bottle stuff is noticeably better than dean's eggnog, but it's so damn expensive in that glass bottle (and still pretty hefty priced in the plastic bottle quarts) that idk if it's worth it. the southern comfort nog is a little pricier than the dean's stuff, however one of those paper quart cartons is just a perfect balance of high-end-nog flavor and non-exorbitant prices. it's the bees' knees, if you will, and if given a choice where i'm not penny pinching that's what i'll go for.

conversely, avoid that other non-alcoholic "holiday nog" shit like the plague.... i think that "international delights" coffee creamer company makes it and it's fucking awful. also, the walgreens house brand nice! has some lower-end eggnog that CAN be ok and drinkable if you get committed to the funkiness of it and just keep soldiering through, and of course when it hits the first week of january and they're clearing it out (also the week after easter too) for like $1-1.50 a quart it works.... but only because it's so damn cheap. also i think there's some other goofy no-name brand that's like "organic" or something, and it's shit shit shit shit SHIT. stick with soco/oberweis/deans and thank me later.

so there you have it guys, my unnecessarily long and deep thoughts on egg nog good and bag. what kinds/brands do you guys fuck with, and does anyone have any spiking tips that's better than this god-forsaken pre-made-alcoholic shit from jewel that only gets you to the promised land if you do a whole bottle of it, as it's neither good as alcohol nor egg nog so why am i fucking with it again? oh yeah it's a tongue in cheek gift. c'est la vie.

EGG NOG THOUGHTS: WHAT'S GOOD? WHAT'S BAD? LIGHT EM UP!!!!

Best I had was when I made it on my own...you just have to mentally get over the raw eggs thing. I think it was worth the risk...it was really damn good and very light and airy. Store bought stuff is really thick.

christian bros? is this some jewel-caliber shit, or where did you get it?

i'm pretty sure the "holiday nog" i tried last year was the international delight coffee creamer ppl,and when me and my brother got home and drank it the shit just wasted wrong/off. then we looked at the carton and it said HOLIDAY NOG and we noticed it never said egg nog, so maybe it was supposed to be some sort of "nog" sans the "egg" part of it? it wasnt as yellow as a proper nog,and the flavor was certainly off.

other than the poo-poo/above-it-all type who showed up to remind the world that they transcend egg nog, does anyone here swear by the oberweis glass bottle shit? i think next time i go up to jewel i'm going to have to splurge on one of the big glass ones and give it a go.... i mean, i gotta see if the oberweis stuff is truly GOAT or not cuz while i do champion the soco as the best all around stuff, it might be that i truly do think the glass oberweis stuff is the way to go (just like their chocolate milk > all-except-that-mythical-west-coast-hershey's-chocolate-milk (the full fat stuff that came in quart cartons that looked like the chcolate bar packaging) it's just that maybe it's not worth the $6-7 or whatever (esp if ur lazy to get the deposit back)

Agreed. My sister and I had a bottle on Thanksgiving. She loved it. Only problem is it is very filling. 6.99 a bottle.

First time I had Egg Nog was at the old Chicago Stadium, Pistons v Bulls, Xmas Day (Some great games for you vets out there). They had Rum in it, had a few cups, good, filling, mmm....

Had it a few times after that, still enjoyed it....then saw this and it still reminds me of it....CANT DO IT!

What was that salad "recipe" you took claim to again and called it cooking?

Eggnog and frozen custard are both in the "sweet, egg-related dairy" family, I guess.

Egg nog is awesome. The Oberweis stuff you can eat with a fork. However I thought it would be great in cereal but it isn't.

I really like the Oberweis...but will drink the Dean's in a pinch. I will use it in my coffee during the holiday season.

Rum or Bourbon? Both work just fine...with a little nutmeg sprinkled on top.

Curdle?

Egg Nog is great in coffee. Does cream curdle in coffee? No. Why should egg nog?

I've never experienced the curdling when adding booze either...I must always use creamier nog.

foiled in my attempt to acquire an egg nog latte at Starbucks last week, I made some at home the other day. Wife gets most of the nog and foam. I do about equal parts hot nog and espresso.
