This very popular and highly rated mexican restaurant in Pilsen burned to the ground last night. I've never been and had always wanted to. Been around since 1962. I'm assuming they will rebuild given how popular the place was.

You think all the employees out of jobs will get a piece of the hush hush insurance money?

So much for the health code violations relating to an old place.

Place was cash only and packed to the gills almost always. I'm sure nothing shady going on.

They weren't. The other thread is in the RIP section. Shakes just has a little Beardown in him and wanted to create his own thread.

Meanwhile, a Pilsen neighbor has set up a GoFundMe page to help the Gutierrez family as they rebuild the restaurant and Fabulous Freddie's Italian Eatery in Bridgeport has offered to hire a few Nuevo Leon employees while the restaurant rebuilds.

This was one of my favorite places in the city. I can't wait til they provide decent washrooms in the rebuilt location.

I remember my favorite Greektown restaurant, The Courtyards of Plaka, burned down a few years ago. There was fanfare about it reopening for the customers. The corner of Halsted and Van Buren still sits vacant.

owners on the verge of retirement who own an outdated building in an emerging part of the city...The most likely situation is someone torched the place for them. They get the insurance money on the building then sell the lot to a developer who was going to tear it down anyway.

We don't do it often but when we do, there are places we really like to go - this was one of them.

This was my mom's favorite restaurant in the city. Shame to see it go.
