At first I was like "they're selling out."
and then I was like...they just released the stuff to the digital world? LZ held out longer than most bands.

they did, but probably for a higher payday. jimmy page is notoriously strict with money, so much so that he was called led wallet back in the day.

Jimmy is morphing into a hybrid of Arlo Guthrie and Michael McDonald:

...and Robert Plant is morphing into the right side of Peter Gabriel's face (his left side I'd imagine):

I have a few times, and while it is very entertaining, Richard Cole greatly stretched the truth as far as the partying and whatnot. The happenings onstage and in the studio are more accurate.

LZ4, aka Zoso, is a veritable greatest hits album... but Houses is my favorite. Enjoy, Doug. Maybe you'll find, as I did with the Doors later in the life, you missed something special.

au contraie, i think fans would have been thrilled just to hear the song on TV. as bad as the song remains the same is, fans literally packed theatres for weeks just to get a glimpse of the band

LZII and physical graffiti is where its at, doug. if and when you get to be more of a hardcore zephead, LZIII and presence are top notch offerings as well. the opening track of the latter album, "achilles last stand" is probably my favorite song of all time*

*this list consists of songs 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, etc..

My Zeppelin album genesis:

Image

Gotta buy it. All the kids from the opposing team are playing this album after the game. Fell in love

Image

I know some songs on this album. Ok, these guys are fucking awesome.

Image
Smokin' herb. These guys are my favorite band . . . it's 1982.

Image
Now I'm known as a Zepp head. My friend Charie and I only listen to LZ, the Stones and the Who.

Image
Wait. Isn't Houses of the Holy on Physical Graffitti??

Image
Took me a few months, but I soon declare this is the best Zepp album ever made!

Image
Had to buy it. Not disappointed.

Image
First disappointement ever. If I'm missing something, please fill me in.

Got Hammer of the Gods for Xmas from my folks in '84. Are the hotel room stories b.s? Don't ruin it for me!

This thread is just making tomorrow Led Zeppelin Wednesday.

Physical Graffiti, particularly disc one, is my favorite LZ disc. Great album to listen to on my trips back and forth to Michigan to visit my future wife.

I really like a lot of the songs on the album, despite no keyboards or acoustic guitars. In the break of a tour, Robert Plant was in a car accident and severly injured his ankle. It was not known at the time if he would ever walk again, let alone perform. Robert recorded all the vocals for this album from his wheelchair. To make matters worse, the gov't of Britain was imposing insane taxes on royalties bands made, some upwards of 90%! So no musicians were living in Britain full time, and certainly none were recording there.

They were able to book like 10 days of studio time in Munich, Germany. Jimmy worked 18 hour days to get all of the guitar overdubs and mixing done. The night before his time was up, he still had to do most of the overdubs on 'Achilles Last Stand,' 'Royal Orleans,' and all that was done on 'Tea For One' was the drums, vocals, and a scratch guitar. Jimmy he still had about 2 weeks worth of work left to do. So he called Mick Jagger and asked for 2 extra days. Somehow, he was able to finish the entire album in barely 20 days time. Considering the circumstances and the unkown future of the band, I think its a hellava project.

The "Shark Incident" most definetly did happen, though nobody except those that were there really know to what degree. Some of the other stories are exaagerated at best. As I said earlier, Richard Cole, who was really the main 'source' for the book really stretched the truth when it came the partying and the excess. Though, Jimmy Page really did have a 14 year old girlfriend, and Robert Plant really did proclaim from a hotel balcony that he was a "Golden God," both of which you see represented in the movie "Almost Famous." Cameron Crowe hung out with Zeppelin for a few days on the 1975 tour (a few months before Plant's car accident) and that movie is literally loosely based on some of the happenings in that book.

I'd love to hear a TAKE FIVE segment on "Top 5 Sports Hot Dogs" with "Hot Dog" as the bed music. I love the guitar on that song... just very different for Zep.

Sammy Sosa would have to be on that list.

Slappy had to take Freshmen English over his Senior year in High school. Should of seen an 18 year old guy sitting in a classroom full of 14 year olds.   :P

I like LZ and just like every other young musician, I went through a period where I heard them, loved them, acquired all their stuff, listened to them more and more and more. The problem is, they are played a lot on various radio outlets and it's to the point where I've heard it and I don't really need to hear it anymore. I take nothing away from what a great band they were and their place in rock and roll history.

After all this is said and done, Physical Graffiti remains my favorite. But, my favorite song LZ recorded has to be 'Hey Hey What Can I Do".

This one still gets it done for me.

I have to agree with Mac about Houses of the Holy. Definitely my favorite. Although my favorite LZ song is "All My Love", followed closely by No Quarter. 1 and 1a.

With you completely wdelaney and I'd like to add The Doors to that as well. Apart from "the soft parade", I have no use for the doors anymore.

i blame the program directors of rock stations like the loop.
