I don't know who is more at fault here, Stern for continuing to take checks while admittedly having no passion for no longer having passion for the job or Sirius for paying far beyond market because they paid beyond market for the previous 10 years

As I do not listen I was surprised when I read an article on this in the morning that he works 3 days a week. Seems a bad deal for Sirius only because he probably does not gain many new listeners. I assume he has found his market and numbers years ago and there isn't much growth. On the other hand smarter people than I decided to pay so they must make money.

Does Stern really generate many subscribers for them? Once they cut him loose, revenue might drop off a bit, but expenses will be reduced to nearly nothing.

It's even more important now. It's not too much different than how Netflix and Amazon have put a premium on unique content. Without Stern, SiriusXM is basically Pandora in your car, which is now something you can get built into your car too.

They also charge you more if you want Stern like a premium package.

You also gotta figure that when Stern started, Sirius and XM were two separate and failing companies that both courted him as their savior. Even with him, the two companies had to merge to survive. Add in all of the other entertainment options that have sprung up since, and Stern is arguably even more important now. Yeah, there are those who will whine now that he is "not as funny" as he used to be, and the show has gotten "less edgy", but hey, the dude is now in his early 60s and has evolved/matured. Plus, he is getting more and more celebrities to come out of the woodwork to be interviewed, so his show is still pretty relevant, albeit in a different way than fifteen, ten - even 5 years ago.

To promote family harmony I'd occasionally watch that with the missus. It didn't help that I didn't notice him, instead I just waited for more Heidi Klum & Scary Spice.

Listen to his 9/11 and 9/12 broadcasts if you get a chance and that sort of thing doesnt depress you.

i still like aspects of the show but yes, sirius is the house that howard built. they went up 27 million subscribers when he came on board. it's most certainly about keeping that fanbase. i can't imagine him "gaining" much of a following since 1998.

I first remember listening in the early 90s in DC. I thought it was entertaining but not must listen stuff. I then started listening when he came to Chicago and I thought it was great. I could listen to best of stuff from so many different eras of that show but the last five years have been horrible.

In my opinion, the heart of the Stern show was the crazy callers. You can't have crazy callers at Sirius because the crazies aren't plunking down money for satellite.

Well, I don't watch any television live any more unless it is absolutely necessary.

Americas Got Talent is great because you can plow through the stupid background stories and watch the whole thing in half an hour.

I have to admit, I've always marveled at the whole Stern pheomenon but from a different perspective that was quite afar. Perhaps its why in reading the link I read the other "Bloomberg" link and noted that the numbers cited just didn't add up. A few here have posted sentiments what I read.

Stern went to satellite and satellite basically tanked, not enough subscribers to support true competition. Stern was (and still is) paid in stock, so the merger of the two gave him the BIG money that his fans like to admire. If he's lazy, as some here have noted, it is because his money is tied to the company and the company is what it is today. Until the next form of media comes along to displace it. He doesn't really want to work anymore, and at 62 who could blame him. So Podcasts are definitely out as that would make the accounting much more clear and concise.

As the aforementioned post mentioned, the show was great because of the callers but those people aren't going to pay to hear their hero. I have satellite radio but not because of Stern, but that gets back to my first statement. As the Bloomberg article stated, if Howard left it would only impact 5% of those that listen to him.

caught a little bit of the sandler interview. it always amazes me that he seems like a pretty well adjusted guy that just insists on making horrendously unfunny pieces of shit annually.

it looks like "the ridiculous six" is getting hit pretty hard too.

I have cared much for Stern or his show. When he cares, he has proven to be very good at conducting an interview, but that's not always the case. Sirius can have him.
