i decided to go out for a run last night, since i hadn't run much at all over the weekend. it wasn't too cold, but it was slushy and raining. i wore my modified shoes with the sheet-metal screws in them and they worked like a charm, no slipping or sliding on the icy areas. about a half mile in i rounded a corner and took a step with my left foot with into an icy puddle deep enough to submerge my foot, so that was uncomfortable. i was able to finish a 4 miler and it really wasn't too bad, if my left foot wasn't completely soaked with icy water i might have gone another loop around. the roads have cleared a bit today, but tonight will be icy, gonna have to be careful.

hardly, but I have been getting at it the past couple of months. I go through phases every few years. Then it'll fall by the wayside. Usually some time of injury does me in. I had a sprained ankle that just would not go away last time.

I run outside on sidewalks. No good to lie here so I'll just come out and say it: I run in basketball shoes. Yes I know it's dumb and insane. Hopefully that had no impact on the knee though I know I should get some proper shoes.

Before the knee thing I would try 3-5 miles each day for three days during the week and 6-8 on the weekends.

Sidewalks can be a problem too. Concrete is harder than asphalt. Plus you have the trip hazard expansion joints to contend with. I realize in places sidewalks are the only option but given a choice I would opt for asphalt streets.

Not trying to be the Dan Bernstein know-it-all of running, but just trying to be helpful. Injuries are a part of running but some things can be done to lower the risk.

well, I would try a decent pair of running shoes and cut down the mileage like 25% and see how it goes. I think it is the longer runs that do the damage, not the frequency.

Definitely helpful, thanks. I ask so better informed folks like yourself can help enlighten idiots like myself. I'd run on softer surfaces if I could but i live in a downtown area so it's just more convenient to run in the same space. Have to consider switching that up though.

Is the lakefront an option? North avenue to Foster is about 5 miles. It is a nice loop on nice paths. South side lakefront is nice too.

Let me vote for new shoes. I always forget about it until my knees and feet are in intense pain during and after the run. I change out shoes and its so obvious it was the cause. I have found the more I run and the older I get, the less my body can tolerate old shoes. In my 20's, I would probably log 1000 miles in a pair of shoes. Now I follow the 300 limit pretty closely.

Also try to run on level ground if possible.

I find if i run on small bike paths that are sloped down to the sides it wears on my knee and hip. Not talking about running up and down slopes, but if you are running with the slope on a side of a small hill.

You make a good point about heavily cross-sloped roads. Indeed, when possible it's best to run in the center of those. But I don't see many of those here. Maybe they are more prevalent in hilly areas, to keep rain water from running straight down the road?

Some spots near the fox river on the bike path. The slopes were a by product of irrision mainly. It's hard to run in the middle there in summer as there were many dangerous bikers going really fast.

Sucks running on the ice that develops when property owners do not shovel their sidewalks. I get it if you're right up on a major road and there's like two feet of sidewalk between the storefront and the street, but plain old residential sidewalks? Shovel your sidewalks. You don't have to do it right away, but several days of freeze-thaw cycles make it a bitch. I've had to develop sort of an on-land version of a whip kick to avoid treacherous spots, throwing one leg out to the side and stuff. I look silly and feel silly.

Another reason to run in the street. As most anyone with an asphalt driveway knows, ice does not linger nearly as long on asphalt as it does on concrete.

I've been piling on the miles too this week (though not to the extend of retard). I'm gunning for 40-mile week. to be honest, I'm more worried about the threat of snowfall over the weekend than i am the cold. if you wear the right gear you can run comfortably no matter how cold it is. the problem is the precip on saturday won't be going anywhere, the roads could be dicey for a little while until it warms up a bit again.

I was aiming for 30 miles this week, but don't think that's gonna happen. Was traveling with Paul Ryan on Monday. Tuesday it just seemed to cold and I wasn't in the mood to deal with it. Yesterday was great, though.

I moved down south to Marrieta, GA and it has been incredible so far. Coldest run so far was 40 degrees with a windchill taking it down to 25. Glorious.

Said it before, you won't know hills to you leave IL.

Agreed. Be it for running, golf, or any other outdoor activity, I look at it as there are three elements: Cold, wind, and rain/snow. I am fine with any one of them as long as there is just one. Two or three causes me to quickly loose interest 8)
