Now the Bears currently have the 14th pick. Could be as high as 18 if the Bears beat the Lions. That sucks.

Are these GREAT QBs? No. But they all offer(ed) minimum 4 years of dirt cheap control (<$1M).

Fill around and maybe game manage your way through playoffs and maybe to Super Bowl (Grossman!)

Four of them are pretty great.

That loss yesterday was meaningless and costly. I kind of expect to fuck things up and win next week as well. Maybe Miles Jack falls because of the injury

Larry has spoken

Quote:
Holmes: Win Or Lose Sunday, Bears Can Grab Difference-Maker In 1st Round

By Laurence W. Holmes–

(CBS) It’s perfectly fine for you to root for the Bears this Sunday against the Lions in a contest between a pair of 6-9 teams that has no playoff implications. You don’t have to fight against your instincts in wanting to see good play from “the beloved” this weekend.

Over the last few years, fans and media members have become enamored with the idea of tanking. Most notably, we’ve seen it in the NBA, where it doesn’t necessarily work, as evidenced by the 76ers’ lack of progress.

In football, it’s really about the talent evaluator. Think about how many high picks that have busted. With that in mind, you should want the Bears to play as hard as they can and try to win Sunday instead of securing a higher draft pick with a loss.

Now, that doesn’t mean Chicago needs to put anyone in harm’s way. The Bears won’t, as they’ve already placed receiver Alshon Jeffery on the injured reserve list because he’s still suffering from nagging injuries. Still, coach John Fox and the boys should be full speed ahead.

I know some of you are worried about the draft pick, but let’s take a closer look at this. Tribune beat writer Rich Campbell has crunched the numbers, and depending on the outcome of Sunday’s game, the Bears can pick anywhere between No. 9 and No. 18 in the first round of next year’s draft.

The probability of picking ninth is remote. For that to happen, there would have to be a tie in the Eagles-Giants game, the Bears would have to lose and then some upsets would have to happen.

Regardless, I went back and looked at the 9-18 range from the 2014 draft and evaluated how those 10 players have done, as we now have nearly two full seasons of evidence in deciding what type of difference-maker they are.

Here’s a look at how the players drafted 9-18 from 2014 are doing:

9. Anthony Barr, LB, Vikings

Barr’s Minnesota’s best linebacker, and he’s quickly becoming one of the best in the game. He’s won games by forcing turnovers and has picked up NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. He’s off to a great start with a bright future.

10. Eric Ebron, TE, Lions

Ebron had an up-and-down rookie season, then was much better this year with 42 catches, 512 yards and four touchdowns with an average of 12.2 yards per catch.

11. Taylor Lewan, T, Titans

Taylor’s been a starter at left tackle since midway through his rookie season and was named a captain at the start of this season.

12. Odell Beckham Jr., WR, Giants

He’s a two-time Pro Bowler and perhaps the best receiver in the game. He’s racked up 2,701 yards and 25 touchdowns in 26 career games. He might be the most exciting player in the NFL.

13. Aaron Donald, DT, Rams

Donald should and will get votes for Defensive Player of the Year. He’s been a menace in the middle of the Rams’ defensive line with 11 sacks this season. He posted the highest grade in Week 16 of any defensive player, per Pro Football Focus.

14. Kyle Fuller, CB, Bears

The jury is still out on Fuller, who showed flashes in his 2014 rookie season, then fell apart after about Week 6. He started shaky this year but has gotten better as the season has gone on.

15. Ryan Shazier, LB, Steelers

Shazier’s a solid and productive player for Pittsburgh who has 80 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception this year.

16. Zack Martin, OL, Cowboys

Since he was drafted, Martin’s started every game at guard for Dallas. He had the second-best pass blocking grade for any guard in 2014, according to Pro Football Focus.

17. C.J. Mosley, LB, Ravens

Mosley’s already been a second-team All-Pro player and a Pro Bowler. He’s a terrific player.

18. Calvin Pryor, S, Jets

Like with Fuller, the jury’s still out on Pryor, who’s been more productive in 12 games this season than he was in 16 last year. He still makes some mistakes, but the better play up front by the Jets has made him look better.

So, what’s this list show? That even if the Bears win Sunday and end up picking at No. 18, they can find a quality player and, perhaps, a franchise building block.

Where the Bears draft isn’t nearly as important as who’s doing the drafting. I don’t think that general manager Ryan Pace hit a home run last year, but when you look at his picks, there’s enough to be optimistic that he has a grasp on team-building. Plus, the Bears will have between $60 million and $70 million in cap space to go shopping on the free agency market.

So come Sunday, enjoy yourself in rooting for the Bears to win.

Let's breakdown the 2001 draft from picks 9 to 18 -- after all, we have a whole career to review!

9] Koren Robinson, WR - Seattle: Dude could drop some balls -- 550 targets with 294 career receptions. A difference maker doing kick returns with Minnesota, but only a full time starter for 4 seasons.

10] Jamal Reynolds, DE - Green Bay: Never started a game and was out of the league with 3 sacks after 3 years (and 14 tackles!)

11] Dan Morgan, LB - Carolina: 2004 ProBowler, but only 59 total games. Injured throughout a lot of his career, so may have been better, but reality is reality folks.

12] Damoine Lewis, DT - St. Louis: Many years of decent production with the Rams and Panthers. Chiefs traded this pick for Trent Green and a 5th rounder (Derrick Blaylock, the RB of few years.)

13] Markus Stroud, DE - Jacksonville: Reasonably productive over eight seasons as a full time starter. 3x Pro Bowler, 29.5 career sacks.

14] Kenyatta Walker, OT - Tampa Bay - 5 years of blocking; 1 Super Bowl -- yay offensive linemen!

15] Rod Gardner, WR - Washington - Promising start catching over 1000 yards his 2nd year in the league, but no longevity.

16] Santana Moss, WR - Jets - Most productive of this lot with 10,000+ yds receiving in career.

17] Steve Hutchinson, G - Seattle: May even be better than Moss, blocked for league leader in rushing yards many seasons.

18] Jeff Backus, OT - Detroit: Long time star on the line for Detroit.

---

Conclusion: Draft at the end of the 9-18 range for success.

Dalton is good.

I want them to pick the guy Fangio thinks will be the biggest impact on D in the 1st round.

I loooove Paxton Lynch from Memphis.

My avoid at all costs QB is Connor Cook at Michigan State. I have no idea why he is considered a top QB prospect.
He was awful in every game I watched him in this season.

Let's only hope that the 2016 draftee has the same impact that the 2015 numero uno had

Meh, I'm not crazy about White and wanted a defensive player picked in that spot, but I'm not going to blame anyone for Whites injury. That's just an unfortunate circumstance imo

That corner at Florida didn't look real impressive against Michigan. The announcers said he's going to be a 1st rounder but Rudock (who I like) was abusing him all day. They were going right at him and avoiding the kid on the other side who looks like he's going to be a player. I hope Pace was at that game and he got a big eyeful of that performance.

Hey Doc, where's your guy who scouts the scouts??

It's 11th.

We are now entering the season where draft stocks wildly fluctuate for no good reason. The story around number 11 shouldn't change too much, though.

1. If Goff or Lynch is there take them. With Cleveland, Dallas and San Francisco all picking ahead of the Bears it is unlikely one of them will be around.

2. Myles Jack. This is still possible, but I fear it won't be by the time May rolls around.

3. DeForest Buckner or some shit. Get excited Bears fans as we continue our 2 decade long commitment to fixing either the offensive or defensive line!

That's it! Your comprehensive guide to the Bears first round pick. Refer back to this as necessary for the next 5 months.

Draft a quarterback already, something you haven't done since '03.

My choice is Jared Goff from Cal. He's got good feet and a cannon for an arm with precise deep ball accuracy.

Seriously, the guy can play:

Connor Cook looks like a career backup to me but you have to pick someone at some point.

I mean, the plan can't be to have Jay Cutler until he is 40 and if I'm going to roll the dice on a future of some QB who probably sucks in the fifth round I may just say get Cook in the second round and hope he proves us wrong.

at least we can delude ourselves for another season that White might be good. Beasley would have been the defensive guy they chose and he looked bad.

I think the final defensive "my guy" before the draft was Bud Du Pree. He has looked good.

There will be other guys who prove themselves more attractive than the Cook type's once they are evaluated for their individual skills. There is talk about the QB from North Dakota, for instance. I'd like to see how Daughty from Western Kentucky looks after more intensive evaluation although right now he is looked at as a later round guy. Maybe Cardale Jones will knock your socks off. Give this time before making any definitive statements other than Christian Hackenburg sucks.

Goff will be going to Cleveland.

I'd say the Bears are in line to take Reggie Ragland or Myles Jack. I think it will probably be Ragland.

Mel Kiper at ESPN had his first Mock Draft of 2016 and he had the Bears taking:

Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama

has to be Ragland. Jack is undersized and they need to hit on this pick.

If they came back later with a Jack or Scoobey Wright, that would be good

That works for me.

No thanks on any QB in the 1st round. They can get a guy in the following rounds at QB if they want.

I want the best defensive guy on the board at their pick unless there is just an absolute no brainer on O that falls to them.

Fangio is going to have a lot of say on this pick so I suspect it will be a LB but I think the better talent is on the DL.

The Bears would be stupid to pass on Goff or Lynch where they are picking.

I'm not ready to plan for the future with Kevin Hogan or Cardale Jones.

Mel has Goff going #2 to Cleveland and Lynch #15 to the Rams.

If they deem those 2 as no brainers on O then have at it, but I do not consider them no brainers.

If they use a 1st round pick on a QB then it needs to be a lock. This team has too many holes to roll the dice on a QB in the first round.

That is how you end up with a horrible run of quarterbacks though throughout most of your history. A QB who is a "lock" gets picked first, or in extremely rare circumstances second.

The only "lock" in the past 5 years has been Andrew Luck. We are going to wait a long time for the next one then.

Also, the fact that this team has a lot of holes is a reason why you pick a quarterback now. It's not like this team becomes great next year with a good LB or OL.
