Axis and Allies is much better than Risk, its basically Risk on steroids.

FYI, the guy who just won the WSOP main event is a former Risk world champ.

Holing up in Australia works because no one army can hold Asia. It's too big. You're under attack from both Europe and North America. Nobody is going to sit back and let you get seven armies per turn...

the thing about Asia is that it really isn't as hard as it seems. NOBODY is willing to fight for it early in a game, so once the west is secure you can gobble up poorly defended Asian territories because nobody will fortify there because they are hiding in australia and south america. if you can get that wall built securing safety from Europe and North Africa, Kamchatka is the only way out of there and you can just let Australia starve down there until you are ready to win the game and knock them out. the great thing is that nobody will realize what you are doing until you have that 3-territory wall protecting your ass while you rampage.

The problem with Axis and Allies is it can turn into a huge turtle (esp on the Eastern Front) that eventually gets decided by dice roll when Germany tries to crack through the Soviets. There was a problem with Global 1941 where the UK and USSR could hold off Germany unassisted while the USA took care of Japan.

Still played a few games (one of which went about 2 weeks) where Germany got a very lucky start and the games were decided by the naval conflict in the Atlantic and desperate UK and USSR attacks aimed at keeping Germany from amassing giant blobs of units. Those were fun, but A&A can easily turn into a staring contest.

Axis and Allies is legit. I remember my dad teaching me how to play and never being the first to attack. But he always kicked my ass once I did try starting something.
