The only acceptable reason for NOT voting for Griffey would be that the 3 voters used all 10 spots on the ballot and knew Jr. was going to get in and wanted to to "SAVE" guys from dropping off.....

I hate the ten vote limit. I also do not like the guys under 5% getting dropped combined with the NEW shorter shelf life to just stay on the ballot.

BUT my biggest complaint is that guys like Telander have a vote and Vince Scully and others like him do not. The BBWAA being the sole source of votes is ridiculous.

No.

But I wouldn't have put in the 0.2 inning wonder that was Eckersley either.

I'm not even a big Hoffman guy but this Hall has always been obsessed with #s. I don't see how you can keep "the all time leader" of any traditionally revered stat out

All time hit leader and All time Home run leader both not in.

In fairness, Eck did start for 13 seasons before becoming a closer, and was a 20-game winner with a no-hitter under his belt. I did a double-take when I looked at his stats from 1989 and 1990 (as Oakland's closer): WHIPs of 0.607 and 0.614.

We're waiting to put Rivera in before Hoffman.

It's criminal that Edgar Martinez is never going to get in due to a bias against a position. If a DH can't get in, I don't want any one inning pitchers in there either.

Anyway, my case for Edgar Martinez would start with the fact that there are many guys in the Hall of Fame in spite of their defensive shortcomings. If there had been a DH in Ted Williams' era, that's what he would have been. And he would have been more valuable than he was because his replacement in left would have undoubtedly been better defensively. If the DH hadn't existed in Martinez's time, he would have played about an average third or a little less and might have been a first ballot guy.

 Le Batard is trolling people on Twitter claiming he didn't vote for Griffey and it's somehow working despite that whole national story about him getting stripped of his vote a few years ago.

Here's the problem, though. If we put Bonds in, how do we keep Sammy out? I definitely don't want Sosa in. In my mind, he's not a Hall of Famer. I'm not sure what he is. But I think it's asking a lot for people to differentiate who's who and what's what. If we're going on the numbers, how do we not go on the numbers for everyone? On the other hand, we can't be sure Griffey was clean.

I wasn't sure Griffey was. Sosa was just a guy. Bonds was a great player no matter what. His worst season is better than the best of a current and future HoFer. That's really impressive.

Like I said, I don't know what Sosa was. It's hard to call him "just a guy" when he hit 60+ more than anyone.

On the one hand, I figure, fuck it, it's not that important. They put up the numbers, let them all in based on performance. But I just know Palmeiro wasn't better than Will Clark. They played together in college and Clark was a star and Palmeiro was a guy. It doesn't seem fair that in some ways Sosa was better than Frank. And that's even if they both juiced. Is there any doubt that Frank was better if they were both clean? It's just fucked up. I'm annoyed that we even have to think about it.

But I have to laugh at a guy like Costas getting so furious over a guy taking performance enhancers. Why doesn't he quit wearing fake hair and let a younger, natural broadcaster get on TV?

The way this Hall of Fame is run sucks to begin with (numbers obsession) and now the steroid era has completely ruined it because they raped the numbers.

Regardless of the steroid issue and the complications that come with all that, I just don't see how anyone can seriously deny Bonds is a HoFer. Admittedly, I'm just a casual fan, but he's easily the best baseball player I've ever watched. The BBWAA continue to embarrass themselves.

I think we're already at this point with Biggio in but Bagwell out and Piazza in but Sosa out. For as much as BWAA members want to act like grand moral arbiters dedicated to preserving the integrity of the game, the steroid issue is really just a way to punish guys they dislike while letting the ones they do like slide.

At their peak it's close between A-Rod, Bonds, and Griffey

For peak WAR I'd throw Pujols in as honorable mention, but clearly not in the same league defensively as any of those three.
