Arians would have been nice, but Rivera is just meh to me at this point. Yes, he's hot right now after a 15-1 season and demolishing the Seahawks, but he was on the hot seat just as recently as last season if I recall correctly.

You indeed recall correctly.

Jerry Richardson being a cheapass that didn't want to pay 2 coaches is basically what saved Rivera's job after last season.

It still boggles my mind that when the Bears were the most desirable job available after firing Lovie they went for the CFL coach no other team in the league save the Browns showed any interest in, with Arians being the main guy they passed up.

They had him but Emery mismanaged it by forcing Arians to inherit Marinelli. Arians refused.

There was also that thing about the Bears wanting Arians to do a mock press conference to see how he would perform with media...even though he had already done real ones with Indy the year before (when he also happened to win coach of the year). I can just see Arians' face when Sweaty Teddy asked him to do that.

That's incredibly demeaning. If I was a coach with options I'd walk out after being asked to do that.

I think it's been said that the McCaskeys will not a hire a head coach with a personality.

Do you believe press conference and sideline behavior are good indications of head coaching ability?

No, what saved him was him showing some flexibility and transforming from one of the most conservative coaches in the NFL to one of the most aggressive. He's one of the first head coaches to publicly embrace the odds/analytics of going for it on 4th and short, and it's paid dividends for him. Hopefully more coaches learn from him. He's been a great head coach for the last two seasons now.

Ron Rivera's Panthers have won the NFC South division the last three seasons.
