I think no less than 15% of national Chicago Blackhawks fandom is based in how they were inexplicably some sort of hammer of the gods in NHL '94. A regulation win in Raleigh would be nice as the Hurricanes need to be disabused of their perennial playoff pipe dreams. They have lots of expiring contracts to move and will make the trade deadline fun (possibly even for us) if they actually learn to give up for once.

WhoTF are the knuckleheads that put the NHL season schedule together? I mean, I can understand how maybe teams like Dallas have 3 games in hand on the Hawk, but look at the Pacific - the Shark have played SIX fewer games

I think much like baseball, the master schedule is done by one guy who's been doing it for years.

I read somewhere that the United Center is booked solid in 2016, so they had to burn off a lot of games early. Only 14 home games between now and the end, compared with 19 for the Sharkies. It has to be hard to schedule the NHL because of the multi-purpose nature of the arenas. It's especially tough when teams don't have the master lease and therefore schedule priority (though somewhat surprisingly, the Kings and Bruins have priority over the Lakers and Celtics, respectively. It's a minor curiosity of sports-biz that the Bruins own the Garden and part of the mighty NESN while the Celtics are just a tenant and slum it on a lesser RSN).
