That doesn't sound very worthwhile. But it's pretty clear that he doesn't if you listen to the show and know even a bit about the league.

You're a pretty knowledgeable and well spoken guy but he will make you out to sound like Evergreen Park Jeremy. #OhMyGod

 yeah that's a dipshit opinion. Probably doesn't help that he frequently abuses the meaning of 'replacement-level'

I'm not very bright and I would crush Dan in an NBA argument.

Just so I'm not accused of imaginary radio here, it was when they interviewed Mark Schanowski. Dan said, roughly paraphrasing, "The Bulls dont look like a well coached team, but I can't say specifically what Hoiberg is doing wrong. What do you think the Bulls would look like if an average coach, a replacement level coach, say Rick Carlisle, was coaching this team?"

I'm pretty sure almost every NBA fan would have Rick Carlisle in their top 5, and exactly 0% would describe him as a replacement level coach. This is as bad as Mac not knowing who John Wall was his year at Kentucky.

Bad thoughts by Dan there.

Odd considering I am pretty sure he has praised Carlisle in the past as being one of the better coaches in the league.

This is the gayest thread title ever.

Anyway, Dan was bragging today about how many doctors he knows.

It's time we start talking about Post-Peak Bernstein.

He's like the dude in Flowers for Algernon. Pretty soon, he'll just be muttering about Chronic Emphatic Insipidothopy and losing arguments to David Schuster.

what was funny to me is dan uses the WAR term replacement level for everything.. yet the one time a caller asked if you add up a teams war shouldnt that equal their win total and Dan basically said he didnt know how WAR was calculated....

I like advanced stats, but I can't get on board with unwavering fealty to a statistic that relies on comparing real players to fictitious ones. I only care about comparing players to other players.

The concept of a "replacement player" is fine, but dan doesn't seem to grasp that it's simply a term meaning "baseline". He acts as if the "replacement player" represents actual people, as if, when a team has a guy playing short who has a negative WAR, they can simply reach into AAA and call up a "replacement level player" and do better than the guy they have.

Exactly Jorr. And again Dan lazily uses this stats to avoid watching games. Sure he may be a math fan and stats can add to the game bu these stats are perfect for lazy radio hosts.

It's weird, because Dan seems like the total opposite of a math/science guy. STEMlords probably don't speed-run the New York Times crossword every morning. He's just along for the ride because data is so in right now.

based on the podcast descriptions, the show sure seemed '85-Bears heavy...

Was it for.the.sponsors. or something? This used to be the kind of show who'd giggle at those drunken reunions, not spend so much time on maudlin nostalgia.

Big time '85 Bears love from Bernstein during the first part of the show yesterday.

So much and obviously over the top that there must have been a sponsor/money issue at the core.

Bernstein told stories about begging his mom to go to Jewels, etc. to get all the freebies back in the day. Looking at the The Black and Blues Brothers poster on his wall every morning when he woke up, etc., etc...

He told the same great stories that happy die hard Bears fans have told for decades.

You know, the same ones he has been ridiculing for years on the air.

The new suit at the top must have been listening a bit closer yesterday?

ugh, that blows. You'd think anyone with that kind of sentiment would just be on 1000 anyway, as they have an ex-Bear AND (I'm assuming) a Ditka appearance.

Not listen to the guy who's mindset is usually 'that thing you like is actually bad you're dumb for caring' talk about it instead.

That really highlights Dan's specious knowledge of advanced metrics (I doubt he actually knows what variance is, much less how it is calculated). It's SABR 101 to know that the "Wins" in "Wins Above Replacement player" or "runs" in "Value Over Replacement Player" aren't equated 1:1 with extra wins in the column, or overall, "real" runs scored.

Hell, even "replacement player" doesn't equate with zero runs or wins. A team comprised entirely of replacement level players would still win games, they would simply be, overall, exceptionally, historically bad.

Does he think the listener doesn't notice? I guess he just doesn't give a fuck about being a disingenuous prick as long as his checks cash.

Loved the hockey talk as he basically read the latest drivel from TCI. Dan goes on to tell Hawks fans that Bowman will need to make moves like last year to bring in help like Desjardins and Vermette, while forgetting it was cap space created by Kane's injury that allowed those moves to work. Yes I was listening to the show, guilty as charged...

The dirty little secret about the saber world is that there are about 10% of the people who cloak themselves in the term "sabermatrician" who can speak with knowledge about the fundamentals of the topic. The rest are just repeating. It's like a world of guys looking through telescopes in their backyards and claiming to be astronomers. You here Len Kasper speak and you'd think he was crunching numbers and analyzing equations in his off time.
