If Lovie trades up from Illinois, it'll be for the NFL. As I said about him seeing himself as a head coach, I also think he sees himself as a temporarily disgraced NFL coach. Hell, maybe he comes back to the Bears for a short-term caretaker tenure after John Fox decides he's too old to see this crap through. Sure, it's crazy, but raise your hand if you thought you'd be talking about Fighting Illini head coach Lovie Smith 36 hours ago.

Nah. Pace wouldn't hire Lovie.

I said it before, Sean Peyton is gonna replace John Fox. Pace and Peyton are tight.

If Lovie is winning at Illinois he'll stay. I cant imagine there's anything he wants more than to win with (of all programs) the one just south of the the NFL team that fired him for Marc f'in Trestman. Part of the reason he's taking this job is its personal, he wants to show up the Bears.

Before you dismiss that, the only way he settles for this job instead of DC somewhere is ego. If his ego is big enough to have him jump down a level its definitely big enough to take the job that puts him within earshot of his former bosses.

Were thru the first semester of our season, gentlemen

Usually the hard ass coaches who burn out in the NFL seem ripe for a bunch of college kids who will do whatever he says.

This is the opposite. Interesting.

I think Lovie is doing this partially to set his kids up for their coaching careers.

You don't think Lovie is going to get more kids to look at Illinois than Tim Beckman or Bill Cubit?

We can't pay lottery winners but we can pay Cubit $1 million to be fired plus like $21 million for Lovie? I-L-L

If you took all the money that Illinois is paying to busted out coaches and administrators you could hire Nick Saban at a significant raise.

Cubit is kind of like a lottery winner.

Rumors of Jeff Tedford possibilities as OC.

This would be an amazing turn of events. I don't think I'm overstating it in saying this is better than the OJ Dream Team.

Will Lovie be allowed to collect his entire NFL salary because he's a college coach now?

Great minds think alike.

I believe he does, sire (who can name the movie?). Good for Lovie.

Lovie collects the difference from what UofI pays him and $6mil from TB for the next 2 years is how I understand it. His salary escalates from $2mil the first 2 years up to $5 mil at the end.

SO ILLINI....Ryan Baker dropping the "You dont think Lovie Smith wont get an audience with any recruit he wants?"

me "NO".....

This is what you get for being a smug dick as the head coach for years and not talking to people, well, now you need that popularity....and its not there.

Of course he will get some sit downs and will get more than Cubit, but you think he is outrecruiting Harbaugh and Meyers?

Also, if the appeal of Lovie is that he is a ethical guy who will help a young man mature, well....GO CATS seems to run that operation well.

Its an upgrade for the whole Illini program, but its a long trek back for a team competes in the Big 10...

Every NFL coach literally does the same thing. This was a bad argument when Lovie coached the Bears and it's still a bad argument.

Not saying you need to be a superstar, but Lovie never won a super bowl, he isnt the household name Ryan Baker thinks he is.

Thus needed to do more than he did ...in terms of being a public figure.

While I think Lovie would be a great guy to send a kid to, the Kid probably will never see the value of it. He will see the $100's and women at other places.

Maybe the Engineering and Golf superior play can work its way into the conversation

Nobody thinks that.

And nobody they would have gotten is going to outrecruit Michigan or Ohio State - which is the case for 99.8% of the football programs in America.

Agreed. Unless they hired Nick Saban, they are not going to outrecruit Harbaugh or Meyers.

....he wont get sit downs with everyone he wants, like Ryan Baker...

Recruits Mom "Joey, its Lovie Smith calling"
Joey "Who?"
mom "he says his name is Lovie....."
Joey "take a message"

Somebody else in the program is gonna have to do the hundred dollar hand shakes and get the hookers. Like at Louisville where Rick Pitino had no idea what was going on. In fact, I nominate Doc for this job.

Big 10 going to corner the market on Super Bowl losing coaches. NU should bring Callahan back.
