Nobody thinks that.

And nobody they would have gotten is going to outrecruit Michigan or Ohio State - which is the case for 99.8% of the football programs in America.

....he wont get sit downs with everyone he wants, like Ryan Baker...

Recruits Mom "Joey, its Lovie Smith calling"
Joey "Who?"
mom "he says his name is Lovie....."
Joey "take a message"

But still better than like 97.2% of the guys Illinois could have hired instead.

Lovie will have a nice defense, gonna beat most of the teams...

Once again, its Lovie and the need for a full blown OC to create, recruit and run an offense.

He doesnt have a such a great track record of finding Offensive minds, except for the last guy who took his job....

I think Tedford was going to be a good hire if he hadn't gotten sick.

Not a fan of being the guys first NFL team as an OC....Want someone who has spent some time in an NFL Booth with a veteran signal caller.

I do not know how Lovie will do as a college coach, but this hire is the absolute BEST hire that Illinois could possibly make.

Lovie has the resume. He has the support of his players and other coaches. And, while it may not seem like a big deal, the fact that he is a black head coach will play big time in recruiting.

The question is, does it translate to wins. We will see. Have to give it to the new AD, guy basically made the football program respectable again in 1 day. Should be interesting what he does to the bball team when he gets rid of Groce in the next 12 months.

Hoiberg will probably be available by then

What suburban high school did Lovie's sons attend? Didn't at least one of them play football? That kid could help recruit that school and district for that matter.

Granted, not a lot of wang whippers in the NW suburbs. But there are a few. Lovie's sons could be an asset recruiting that area one would think.

Arlington Heights has a lot of guys named Wang. They might own whips.

The biggest difference between the SEC and other conferences, in my opinion, was in the quality of the coaching, not in the talent. The Big Ten has significantly upgraded its coaching quality in the past 3 years.

I'm just glad they didn't hire Johnny Tryhard from Southern Poor State University.

Speed, Sec is loaded with speed @ every position, Lovie is a lousy coach and Illinois would have been better off hiring Leach like I wanted 4 years ago.

They should have kept Zook.

Illinois fans lose their minds after any little bit of success.

Zook was an awful coach, if you can't dominate in Florida with that talent, then you suck. Zook could recruit here but just a horseshit coach.

And yet he's still better than anybody they've gotten since.

Until now.

I'm not sure how this can be looked at as a bad thing. From Beckman to Lovie?

I just saw clips of the press conference on CSN.

Lovie appeared to be genuinely excited, determined and refreshed for this amazing opportunity.

I'm happy for the Illini faithful. Congratulations.

Best of luck to Lovie and the Illini... except against Northwestern.

Exactly.

Illinois fans should be over the moon right now. This is as good as they could hope for.

I agree, Nas. My reaction as well. That Bernstein is one race-baiting, sick, son of a bitch!!!! Also happens to be a racist himself.

I read the headline and immediately thought...it's Rosenbloom trying to do something relevant.

Imagine my lack of surprise to read the ramblings of a man with a grudge.

I agree Rosie that Rosie is just a bitter bitch. And his "Pot head" act on Saturdays is weird and stupid. He's a 60 year old guy doing a stoner shtick. Stupid.

8-4. That's all this hire is about. That's all Illinois wants. Maybe in year 4 Lovie gets them to 9-3 which wins their weak division and they upset Ohio St or Michigan in the conference championship game.

I'm admittedly not a college football guru, but isn't Lovie the biggest name with the most past success that Illinois could have obtained?

Seems to me like a slam dunk.

Yep.

Worked out perfectly for them. Lovie is older but not that old. He's made his money. Got fired by Tampa. He's a little bitter. Figured the best he'll do from now on is be a DC in the NFL. Still wants to be the big boss some where. Was flattered to get the call and took it. Probably wants to stick it to the Bears a little by having success 2 hours away. Not that it's really sticking it to them, but Lovie looks at it that way.
