Who's got the best?

Light em up!

Best I've had out has probably been at 545 North in Libertyville. They take the corned beef, slice it against the grain into 3/4"-1" slabs and give it a quick char on the grill. It dries things up a little and gives it a real nice flavor. I've done it at home and it's now my go to way to finish corned beef.

Many, most are buying the CB already made, just heating it up.

I will now give out my hidden gem.

Frank and Marys
2905 N Elston

One of the last real old school places in the city. Frank and Mary are siblings and really old, cant imagine them doing this much longer.

Frank manages the bar and Mary cooks.

Marys makes 1 or 2 hot dishes daily for lunch. Thats it. There is no menu. You ask 'Whats for Lunch and if you are lucky, you get 2 choices"

Its a vintage hot plate lunch and if she has plenty and you want more, she will get you a second plate.

She makes CBC on a regular basis, I assume today its on the menu.

If you drive by anyday at lunch, you will see garbage trucks, service trucks, etc, because thats who goes their to eat.

If you go at night, expect to see 5 people drinking. Funny seeing reviews on Yelp from girls "This place is great, had a great time" Its a dive, no band, no peanuts, $1 buds and a juke box, but I see many people post on Yelp that they wondered in or went with friends. Just not the place that you meet with friends.

Someone will buy it soon and spruce it up, but today it is the last of the "Hot Plate" meals you can find in the city. No gimmicks, just real old schools 60's living.

Yes, its looks a lil scary, but walk on in, have your lunch. Dresscode is "Not too Nice" you will stick out like a sore thumb.

We make it at home on the bbq. Can't beat it.

Not a big fan. Love a full Irish breakfast though.
