I didn't see him out there on the court missing any shots.
He will be FINE!
that excuse may fly in the NBA, but it doesn't in college where coaching is much more emphasized.
Painter is a bum, his players don't play hard for him and right there that's more than enough reason to fire someone. I knew there was something wrong with this team when their star big man loafed down the court on the last possession of the Big 10 championship game and cost his team a sure fire win by not being on the glass for an easy offensive rebound.
Good coaches don't need to tell their players to play hard.
They play hard for him. That is the least of their problems.
He'll be fine for next year. They should be a top 25 team again next year and a new athletic director will be hired soon. His tournament record has been below expectations though and if that doesn't change there will have to be a change.
Recruiting is way up and the team was pretty good this year. They just got upset by a team that hit some pretty insane shots. It sucks but that happens in the tournament.
His biggest problem is that his teams have always had one fatal flaw. This year it was point guard play and that should be fixed next year. Next year is easily his most complete team.
To be honest though, depending on the new athletic director, it wouldn't shock me if Painter eventually left on his own. He's going to be better in the tournament to get another 5-10 years(not doing another Keady where he gets a lifetime pass even with many tournament failures) and he may want to go someplace else and restart.
