She reminds me of how I felt about pre-gastro surgery Al Sharpton. A (unknown to me) carny sounding huckster who had fabricated his 15 seconds of media spotlight. His first story was in many ways his best story, and ever since he's been parasitically on the fringe and yet now has a spotlight (MSNBC) to flutter around. While the board was down I took the opportunity to read up on the whole #rapeculture dealio if for not other reason than my personal credo of seeing the other side of an argument in advocacy. What I learned was interesting in several aspects. Most notably, how the concept is being, for lack of a better word, smeared ever thinner and thinner.

I tried to read not just what Julie wrote but also what she referenced. I don't know the true basis of her story only because weaving the various emphasis of the stories cited together requires a broad stretch of continuity. Reading Julie has me seeing someone who clearly puts some measure of effort into her work, just that I would challenge a peer review. At least a review beyond those amongst her little coterie and those who want to be recognized as such.

They all write with a breezy affectation and write sentences that twist and turn all over themselves until you can't remember where they started or where they were going. Arthur Chu writes the same way, Ryan Lambert and McClure do the same on the hockey beat with the bonus feature of not proofreading.

They're all using the "Modern Internet Stylebook". They've never been properly taught to go back over their writing and eliminate the cliches. Her usage of the snarky ",you know," in the quote above would be an example. Phrases like "that is all" and "not so much" and ending a sentence with "yo" would be other examples. If you aspire to be a real writer rather than just another Facebook Pete you would do well to eliminate such shibboleths from your tired ass prose.

That's a big part of the problem when it comes to this modern type of sports writing. Sports are the antithesis of hip. They are the Establishment. Richard Bradley is someone who has been trained as a professional journalist, yet he was being questioned by people who are completely unaware of and/or oblivious to what have been longstanding journalistic ethics and standards. Anyone who has ever worked a newsroom should have questioned that story based on nothing more than the way it was written. But these modern "journalists" have never seen a newsroom.
