I have this problem with some of my mid-level and junior staff. They let themselves get pushed around sometimes because they want to write and run meetings in a very different way than their male counterparts (and I have 4 males and 4 females who work for me so it's pretty balanced). It definitely shows up in their writing, and in their confidence level when I give them an assignment where I expect them to bullshit their way through it because not even I know the answer.

The hardest thing is not to "convert" them to a "male" style, but to develop and foster a style for everybody that is slightly uncomfortable for everybody at first, but which is consistent and a blend of the better parts of both "male" and "female" styles.

That article describes Jason Goff. But in his defense it's not just doing it to women. He does it to men as well. But Julie has to hate Goff because of it.

My wife is a highly competent executive with a lot of experience in a lot of different areas, but when she presents an idea she often comes across as tentative. If you didn't know her you would certainly be reasonable in thinking, "she doesn't really know what she's talking about." She is easily capable of being a C-level exec, but when you have that kind of style, you're never going to get there. It's sad to say, but bluster and bullshit sells in the American workplace. In my wife's case it doesn't really matter because she doesn't have such aspirations. She's a tech head who is much more comfortable with databases and code than with people, but she will occasionally complain about someone up the org chart not listening to her and I have to remind her about the bees. Bees always pick the best place to put their hive. That's because the apian "scouts" who find the better spot dance longer, harder, and stronger than those who have discovered lesser spots. They are better salesmen. If you believe in something and want to convince others, you have to dance like a bee.
