What with the window to update to it for free on the horizon (July, right?), might as well have a thread for it that will be quickly ignored.

Anyone updated to it? From which version? Opinions? How long did it take? Did you install and then rollback to your previous version?

I have an older computer running 7, and it works just fine and dandy. Reasons I would want to upgrade? Or not to?

Okay, good talk Russ.

Works fine. No blue screens. Updates can be an issue.

I want to believe you.

Did you come off 7 or 8? I only ask because I figure a steak dinner with Shreve is better than dealing with Windows 8.

Do you mean that fact that you can't decide when/if to install updates? Or have their been buggy updates? Or both?

I came both. Windows 7 was great, 8.1 was fine and light but Windows 10 seems to bring the best of both. Light, quick and robust.

i was misinformed on what windows 10 was... i thought you were being suckered in to yearly subscriptions.. but that looks like only office 365 products, supposedly old office version back to 2007 work on it. I'll probably upgrade from 8.1 before the free window closes. I'm generally not a fan of fixing what isntt broke so that's the other reason i didnt bother upgrading from 8.1

Damn well hope so ... although come to think of it I may have a version of all the 2010 products lying around somewhere ... 'Enterprise Blue' or some shit it's called.

Someguy, I'll say you've kinda got me back on the idea of upgrading.

Upgraded from 8 back in December.

I barely noticed a difference.

What about the alleged privacy concerns one sees people yammering about here and there?

You have to turn the telemetry and data collection off manually as it's turned on by default

Cortana is pretty sweet, though.

Well, aluminium oxynitride is kinda close ... it won't bring riches beyond the dreams of Avarice, but still ... 1.6" thick AlON armor is capable of stopping .50 BMG armor-piercing rounds, which can penetrate 3.7" of traditional glass laminate.

Here's the question ... how much frigging time should I budget in my head for this damnable escapade should I choose to dive in?

On mine they threw out such a big cumulative update that it caused issues. I am talking after the initial upgrade to 10. At this point I doubt you would see my problem.

Win10 is by far the best theyve ever made. It runs so fast on older systems its crazy. Old core2duo laptops run like a dream.

Which is why its now the best time to buy a used machine and get the free upgrade. You can buy a $200 laptop and have a rockin machine.

After this summer tho, forget about it. But it wont matter since anything worrh buying after that will come with win10

I just downloaded it yesterday. It seems to work fine.

Why do you need to turn the telemetry and data thing off?

Explain to me what the Cortana deal is as well...

You don't need too, but the option is there. Of course you lose some functionality.

Cortana is a virtual assistant. If you're Mic's up on your PC she can be quite helpful. No cyber BJ's or binary handy Andy's but close enough.

What would be the reasons for turning it off?

Would be better if it was double-pane with more insulation. Definitely wouldn't use it for a commercial storefront.

Is a Mia Wallace situation imminent?

And would you trust SomeGuy to administer the adrenaline shot if necessary?

Of all the things I'd trust SomeGuy to do, that's probably higher on the list.

Holy horse fuckers I hate new things.

The install went well ... only took ~1 hour or so ... but fuck man ... I'm going to hate it for a long, long time, and then I'll get used to it and get over it. Not soon though. Oy.

So my honest thanks, I think, for the overall go-ahead-with-it opinions. Now, I'm going to go hang myself ... send your cards and letters to Hell, and I'll read them when I get settled in there ... and I'll save you a spot.

You'll adjust, when you do it will all click and everything will be alright. Just use the search bar to fin everything. Faster than the old start menus.

Oh hell, I know ... it's starting to come around already. STARTING to.

Say, here's the one bitch of the whole thing ... right before it started to transmogrify, it forced me to uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection, so I'm kinda naked on the internet now ("Windows Defender" notwithstanding). I liked it just fine, and it was free to me, BUT I never did have a disc for it so now I need something.

A fella I know, who knows this kind of thing, said ... "Norton antivirus or Norton 360 is good. Trend micro or mcafee is good too. There is free stuff but I suggest staying away from that."

Any good ideas?
