They all say that. Shaw said that too.

I think Kruger has to go and I think he knows it too. Trading Danault for Teuvo's healthy scratches might actually be a worse trade than Ladd for Dano and a late first, because now we're out a shutdown center (Danault himself was a late first) with nothing to show for it.

Drake Caggiula decided to be Connor McDavid's teammate instead of Nick Schmaltz's, signs an ELC with the Oilers.

Hawks need to get Jimmy Vesey.

Apparently the Hawks got some hot shot two way defenseman from the Czech Republic. Scotty scores again maybe? I will see come the fall.

Michal Kempny, yeah, had himself a great showing at Worlds, for what little that's worth. I hope he turns out to be a good addition, maybe a third-pair-plus kind of mover in the Nick Leddy vein, though we'll have to have a second pairing before we can start talking about how good the third is.

I seriously would not rule out moving Kruger over the summer, new contract notwithstanding. It'll hurt to lose him, but it'll hurt to lose Shaw more, and that's the choice we're facing. I guess I've always gotten a little down on Kruger. As a pure shutdown center on a fourth line that would be most teams' third, he's excellent, but let's face facts: that's still quite a bit of a concession. Every time we've raised the bar for him, he hasn't come through (he was intended to be a #2 center early on and was being called on to be a #3 late this year), and if we're going to call on him to earn his raise by bringing his scoring up from Fucking Never, he's just not gonna. Again, the defense is great, but also again, where is our scoring coming from? Between Toews, Hossa, Kruger, and Kruger's linemates, we're going to have too many black holes up front (and yeah, relative to #1Cs around the NHL, the ~55 you're going to get from Toews is a black hole). Shaw is not perfect, but he has proven his value, and I think there's added value in continuity among roleplayers: look at the trouble the Ducks had this year in losing guys like Palmieri and Beleskey who came up through the ranks -- trouble they only papered over by running a trap the second half of the season.

I just worry that we have no centers who can come up and replace Kruger admirably. Guess it's gotta be Tanner Kero.

Why Penguins' playoff success bodes well for Blackhawks

Everyone in the NHL knew the 2015-16 season would be a hard one for the Blackhawks, who had to make several tough roster choices with $10.5 million-per-year extensions kicking in for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

But the Hawks weren't alone in going through salary-cap hell. Keeping them company were the Penguins, who took the NHL by surprise when they executed a blockbuster trade last summer to acquire winger Phil Kessel from the Maple Leafs.

They added Kessel's $6.8 million cap hit to their books, which already included hefty price tags for center Evgeni Malkin ($9.5 million), captain Sidney Crosby ($8.7 million), defenseman Kris Letang ($7.25 million) and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.75 million).

That's $38 million — more than half of this season's cap space — allotted to five players. By comparison, the Hawks had about $38.3 million tied up in their top five cap hits.

In that way the Penguins were Blackhawks East — a large chunk of their salary cap was devoted to a few star players, with little room for error to surround them with a quality supporting cast.

So if there were an encouraging result for the Hawks this postseason, it's that the Penguins, despite their cap pressure and early struggles, are now in the Stanley Cup Final. It shows if you can find the right mix of top-tier talent and complementary talent on the cheap, you can make a deep playoff run, even with players who earn top-of-the-market salaries.

The Sharks, meanwhile, showed spreading the wealth can work, too. Their top five cap hits totaled about $31.2 million, leaving them room to fashion a deeper roster. The good news for them is the essential players on the roster are under contract for next season.

Hawks general manager Stan Bowman has always downplayed his team's concerns related to the salary cap. His argument makes sense: It's better to have the players who command the highest salaries than not have them. Other teams would gladly use their cap space to sign players such as Toews, Kane or Duncan Keith.

But even with all the talent at the top of their roster, it wasn't a smooth ride to the Stanley Cup Final for the Penguins. In December, they fired coach Mike Johnston and replaced him with Mike Sullivan, who helped get them back on track.

They traded defenseman Rob Scuderi to the Hawks for Trevor Daley, a trade that worked out better for the Penguins. Daley was a better fit with the Penguins and was playing well until he suffered a season-ending broken left ankle in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Regardless of how long it took them, the Penguins started playing championship-level hockey toward the end of the season. The Hawks couldn't quite get back to that level.

As nice as it might be to have cap flexibility to enhance roster depth, it's better to have superstars playing like superstars. Ultimately, the Penguins' marquee players — outside of Fleury, who is now the backup — earned their money, and that's why they are where they are.

Through his first 32 games, Crosby had just six goals and 16 assists. The rest of the season, he had 30 goals and 33 assists. Kessel scored four goals in the conference finals playing on the hot "HBK" line with Carl Hagelin and Nick Bonino.

Meanwhile, Toews did not score a goal, and Kane had just one during the Hawks' first-round exit. That is no coincidence. If those numbers were better, maybe the Hawks would still be playing.

They're not, but the Penguins' success shows that the Hawks' way of building a roster can still pay off.

Are you baiting CH to come in here and say how Toews is a boat anchor.

That said Toews needs to score a bit more and I wish Kane would have done more in the playoffs but whatever. I'd like to punch Bryan Bickell in the face and I continue to worry a bit about Hossa. I hope Keith doesn't start falling apart too.

Nah, just something to refute his continual preaching that the championship window is closed.

Keith will never fall apart. He'll play till he's 45 and die at age 90 of being old.

I don't see how the Penguins making the 2016 Final bodes well for the 2017 Blackhawks. The Penguins don't have to go through the Central Division.

BLACKHAWKS HAVE REPORTEDLY SIGNED 2014 DRAFT PICK NICK SCHMALTZ

Nick Schmaltz, who helped the University of North Dakota win a national title in the spring, has reportedly signed with the Blackhawks.

Craig Morgan of AZ Sports reported the deal.

Schmaltz was the Blackhawks’ 20th overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft. He just finished his sophomore year at North Dakota, recording 11 goals and 35 assists in 37 games.

The Blackhawks will be looking to young talent in the wake of trading 21-year-old Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell to the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday. Teravainen was entering the final year of his current contract, an entry-level deal. On a conference call that night, general manager Stan Bowman was asked about future guys who the Blackhawks could be looking to following Teravainen’s trade. Bowman mentioned Schmaltz specifically.

“He has some dynamic skills,” Bowman said. “Whenever he does sign, he’s a guy who will have a three-year entry deal. A lot of it is the timing game. As they enter that final year of entry level, you have to decide, that’s when guys make a jump in pay. Can you accommodate that? Do they become one of those guys you can put money into or do you look at some younger guys who can do it at a lower dollar amount?”

Probably already slated to be on the top line with Toews and Hossa

I don't think Hossa is a first-liner anymore. You might have to go forth with the Panarin-Toews-Kane line we saw in our little special guest appearance in the playoffs. Anisimov may have to center Schmaltz and Motte on what will have to pass for a second line, while Hossa drops to third with Kruger. Despite having been split up a lot in recent years, Toews and Kane make stuff happen together, as do Panarin and Kane, obviously. It's tempting to load up the first line and punt the rest, like the Ducks did for several years.

Good projection...if that line occurs, we will definitely know if Toews is truly regressing or not

It's a no-lose proposition. If he puts up 70 with the brothers from other mothers, then hooray, he's proved us doubters wrong. If he stalls out around 50, it's because the two of them were hogging the puck.

THIS is problem #1 to solve.
I also agree, Hossa has to drop to line 3 or 4.

The prevailing wisdom is that Brian Campbell is coming back for a victory lap. Not sure it makes a lot of sense, though.

Replacing Johnny Oduya was difficult/impossible because it wasn't just about replacing his skill set but his chemistry with Hjalmarsson. We can't have a Keith/Hjalmarsson pairing at the expense of everyone else going forward.

Campbell would be a luxury. They need a Dman who can play 25 minutes

If Campbell comes cheap, and can at least consistently skate out of his own zone with the puck without generously handing it over to the opposition, then it's a win.

He could be a nice player to have for depth, but does Campbell have enough in the tank to be a #4 Dman? I didn't watch enough Panthers hockey last year to tell.

Buffalo trades for Jimmy Vesey's rights, so we're probably not getting him in free agency after all. That's a bit of a loss for the Hawks.

Ducks trade Andersen to the Leafs, he signs for five more years. Looks like it's all John Gibson from here, plus some other goalie since Anaheim craps out goalies.

Sounds like Yandle is heading to the Panthers, which means Campbell is gone and might come here.

Possible 2016-17 lineup

It’s always fun to take a look ahead and project what the Blackhawks’ lineup could be next season.

Forwards
Richard Panik – Jonathan Toews – Marian Hossa
Artemi Panarin – Artem Anisimov – Patrick Kane
Andrew Shaw – Nick Schmaltz – Vinnie Hinostroza
Andrew Desjardins – Marcus Kruger – Ryan Hartman

Other forward possibilities: Kyle Baun, Luke Johnson, Tanner Kero, Martin Lundberg, Mark McNeill, Tyler Motte.

Defensemen

Duncan Keith – Niklas Hjalmarsson
Michal Kempny – Brent Seabrook
Gustav Forsling – Trevor van Riemsdyk

Other defenseman possibilities: Erik Gustafsson, Ville Pokka, David Rundblad, Viktor Svedberg.

Goalies
Corey Crawford
Scott Darling

Other organizational goalies: Lars Johansson, Mac Carruth.

Yeah, that's not really a championship roster at first glance, but it should be enough to get them in the wild cards and see where things go from there. I mean, I never thought much of San Jose, they just got as far as they did because Alec Martinez got hurt and the Central Division ate itself. In fact, it's pretty much the same path of bullshit DeBoer took with the Devils four years ago, where they beat a crappy Panthers team that barely won its crappy division, beat the always paper-tiger Rangers after the Flyers and Penguins wore themselves out, and lost in the Final to a Kings team that no one was beating.

Thank you for posting that...paints a good picture.
It's a playoff team, but defensively it's as thin as last year, which means you could have a career best season out of Crawford and still be home early.

Defense NEEDED.

Dennis Rasmussen back for a year at $575,000. k whatever. He's probably about a league-average 13th forward.

PittMike's teams have won 5 of the last 8 Stanley Cups--a better winning percentage than Scotty.

Pretty good, relatively detailed break-down of how Pens GM Jim Rutherford navigated Pittsburgh's salary-cap woes to put
together a Stanley Cup winning team:

Not unlike fellow crusty old player Dale Tallon, Rutherford is great at making trades and terrible at pretty much everything else. The Hurricanes have always been one of the worst drafting/developing teams in the league because Rutherford hates to draft defensemen and wait out their growth, and also prefers soft finesse players over all other types. Take a look and find a team that's whiffed in the draft more. Maybe the Avs. It was great to get Kessel, Bonino, and Hagelin, but without the coaching change, they might not have even made the playoffs. Also, the Despres-for-Lovejoy trade is gonna sting. Bob Murray may be even better at fleecing trades than Rutherford.

Stan has never shown himself to be a great trader. He seems to be more concerned with the draft and college free agency, and the latter isn't much more than "we're the Chicago Blackhawks, come here instead of some other place," which piggybacks on Toews/Kane/Keith's success and the fact that Chicago is probably a cooler place to be than Denver or Columbus or Edmonton. I can't see the Hawks doing the same kind of flipping around the Penguins did, in part because they may not have the assets to do it.

Quote:
And then he got to work rebuilding the team in his image. He shipped James Neal, a pure shooter, to Nashville for the gritty goal-mouth presence of Patric Hornqvist and depth forward Nick Spaling.

I'd be interested to learn once and for all how much of Carolina's loathsome approach to hockey, which is simply to get ragdolled up and down the ice and hope to cash in your power plays, was Rutherford's and how much was Peter Karmanos's, because trading a sniper for a traffic cone is the exact opposite of a Rutherford move. This is the guy who sunk $35MM into floaty flake Alex Semin, a guy whose lack of grit got to be too much for even the Washington Capitals to abide, and had to buy him out two years in when even the Hurricanes' stat-padding system couldn't get him above .389 pts/gm.

Kane MVP. A little weird acceptance speech. Thanks a bud back home, fans and dad. No mention of teammates. Oh well he is an awkward guy. Great season for him.
