Unprecedented jump in velocity huh? In his last year with the Orioles his fastball averaged 93.9 mph compared to 94.5 last year. Curve 80.4 to 80.7. He is throwing his change up a couple mph faster though. No one's above suspicion in this era, but the numbers don't really suggest that he's on roids. He always had top of the rotation type stuff in Baltimore he just couldn't control it for shit. Given there is no drastic rise in his velocity it's reasonable to assume his recent production is due to Bosio tweaking his mechanics and the excellent command that seems to have come from that. Also added a devastating cutter, a pitch Baltimore refused to let him throw.

He also is back to his deceptive crossfire delivery since working with Bosio.

But seriously he has NOTHING tonight. Take him out. Don't let this outing sully his start to the season.

edit: There we go.

This kind of thing happens.
He's still one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball.

I'm not denying that.

But baseball fans take Arrieta and Kershaw 1-2...not necessarily in that order.

Yuup. I'd buy that. Those three can go in any order really for top 3.

Ya, I'd take Sale right now.

However come playoff time gimme Arrieta. Sale's demeanor is too fragile to handle high pressure situations like the playoffs. Gets too pissy and shaken for my tastes.

I revise last night's statement:

Arrieta
Kershaw
Hill
Sale

Chris Sale has shown a nasty habit of getting lit up by divisional opponents. I assume opponents have him all scouted out and his stuff doesn't faze them.

I was a Tribe game in Cleveland two years ago where he got lit up. Gave up a grand slam along with 4 other runs.

It's easy to pick on teams you face once a year. But money is made beating the teams your battling in the standings for which Sale has shown he consistently folds.

I like how the Cubs fan talks about consistency, then references a game two years ago as to why Sale has problems. Even Steve doesn't do that.

Yes, Frank, I am explaining to you the issue has spanned over at least 2 years.

One outing does not make something consistent. However, if it's spanned over 2 years then it's called "consistent"

Sale would have less off nights if he got to face the opposing teams pitcher several times a game for the rest of the season.

But you can't always get what you want, right?

Nice teachable moment with my son this morning. Showed him the photo of Sale in despair.

"son," I says, "doesn't matter if you have all the talent in the world. If you can't master the mental aspects of the game, you'll always be a loser."

It must suck to be Chris Sale.

 Sale was charged with six runs after yielding six runs in his previous five starts combined. He walked four after issuing one walk over his previous three starts, including a streak of consecutive complete games without a single free pass coming into Tuesday.

I care about baseball. If you guys show a large interest in discussing the Rays, I'm willing to discuss the Rays. A left-hander that Sale is better than? Matt Moore.

It is easiest to talk Cubs on this board, followed by the White Sox.

Too many of you are fans of one of the Chicago teams...but you aren't baseball fans. You don't know what it is like to want to talk about all 30 teams.

For sure. You'll never hear me deny it. I love baseball. The White Sox are a good baseball team. Sale is an ace.

I cannot speak for any other folks that denied being interested in White Sox baseball though. They may not be lying.
