I heard he was back this morning. How long did it take for the Legend Mike North to say something stupid about Kyle Orton?

Or did he downplay it?

He was too busy telling people that he couldn't tell a Pakistani from an Indian. They all look alike.

and how Dennis Farina sent him the two seasons of Crimestory on DVD.

I'm like Pappy a little. I can't tell an Irish meatball from an Italian meatball. They all have that slack-jawed stupid expression on their faces.

Have a little respect for your vocation Mac. Why would you want horrible talent on the air? Unless, of course, he's competing against you.

He's made plenty of money for being bad. Nobody should feel sorry for him. If he was smart with his money I'm sure he and Bebe are set for the rest of their lives.

If the Score gets rid of him like they should you can have him on your show once a week. "Pappy's night on the town"

Nobody else in town would hire him. Can you think of anybody that would hire him Mac?

Yes. A station looking to add a personality with Q-rating.... with Chicago history, granted not all of the 16 years sizzling, but it's still substantial tenure.... some station that puts a premium on a host's ability to attract sponsors.... a station looking to make headlines, perhaps a station in desperation.... a station like 'GN that could use an at least known entity in PM drive (the Cubs are they're only PM drive attraction -- ever).

Mike may not equal his current compensation with his next deal, but then again, a fraction of that and 12 weeks off a year so he can live part-time in Las Vegas might be appealing to a man with Mikey's tastes. Make no mistake, though: if Mike wants to keep working, there will be takers.

Mac, no way would WGN swap Cochran for North. They wouldn't want ratings to nosedive.

Cochran is the heir apparent to Spike for the morning drive in 2009 I believe. It will be interesting to see if they move WIlliams back to prime time drive and bring in someone new for early afternoons.

Before Williams was shifted to middays, wasn't Cochran handling morning drive fill-in? Now Williams fills in for Spike, so I'm assuming he'll get the permanent nod, with Bob Sirott picking up an extra two hours.

I believe GN kicks your ass in the afternoon with a target audience of "employed people over the age of 25".
Why would they go from a wide general audience to a small niche market with North? what "great" sponsors does he attract? Strip clubs, DUI lawyers and ?? I think you are over valuing the appeal of a niche that you and the score have. BTW, GN already has the best sports talk host on the air in Kaplan.

North will never get a bigtime gig in Chicago on a major general audience station, unless it's 10pm +

Mac, are you saying that WGN would hire Mike North? Because, if your are, I have just one thing to say to you, "who are ya crappin"?

Okay. Keep living in a world in which Steve Cochran and Dave Kaplan are major players. Fact is, without the Cubs, 'GN disappears in the adult male demo. Their long run of opening up a microphone and reading the phone book to post big numbers is finished. The Wally Phillips-Bob Collins Era is long gone. If you believe otherwise, you merely are ill-informed. In afternoons, more specifically, men have been listening to us, Dahl, 'BBM AM, WOJO, Roe Conn, 'GCI and the Loop much more than 'GN over the past three years. But don't let the facts get in the way of your disdain for North.

But your limited demographic isn't what they go for. Maybe you should put your stations billing numbers up against their's. My guess, no comparison.
You and North certainly seem to suffer from the same disease, overt self importance.

Your last statement may have some truth in it, SID... but that doesn't change the fact that my statements about North or what's happened at 'GN aren't spot on. Check it out.

what's to check out about your opinion on North? He's failed at every turn lately, even the morning TV gigs with his show on Chs. 5 and 9. He has no mass appeal and no mass appeal station is going to give him much of a time slot. sports radio is a niche market, even you have to agree with that. 2 stations now in the market aren't ratings blockbusters and another station putting him on would just split that 3 ways. Some mediocre FM station might give him a chance, but none of the top stations will. It would make no business sense.

It always shocks me when people talk about Pappy. The people who defend him always have weird logic. Mac falls into this category as well.

It's always "True, nobody listens to him and he's not very good, but boy does he get sponsors."

Don't sponsors want and audience? Isn't the ad rate based on the actual numbers? Who cares if Pappy has drinks with the sponsors. In the end, they want their ad to be heard.

I mean, they get the arbitron numbers and the rate is set based on that. It's not like the sponsor is saying "That's all of his listeners? You're kidding!! The hell with the slotted ad rate for his numbers. I want to pay an extra 300 dollars per ad just because I like Pappy."

I doubt it works that way. If the Score replaces Pappy and that guy has the same amount of listeners he will get the same amount of ad money. If he has more listeners he'll get more ad money. It really is that simple.

So Mac - Which North show are we talking about? The sports focused one which was soundly pounded and sent with its tail between its legs to a different time slot by MJH a few years ago?...or the one which nearly dragged down the Score as Pappy tried to mix in politics & social commentary? Maybe he could get Anne Maxfield back too! I'm not sure history indicates that North would suddenly steal male listeners from you, Roe or B & B. Then again radio management has not always shown real foresight.

Mac......just because someone will put Mike on the air doesnt mean they should. You've BLASTED Murph here a number of times but Murphs show is one hundred times more entertaining than that Northshitfest that is on in the morning.

Why do you think someone will hire Mike when his "sports" show cant beat the National show from your station? A show hosted by a former beat reporter from the Score.

"The real estate game"?

"Kudos of the day"?

"HGH player of the day"?

"Freds HIP HOP moments"?

Jen opening her mouth and speaking?

"Freds Movie reviews"?

SHIT SHIT SHIT.....its all SHIT!

HEY DAN,

Hell Mac, I'll listen to WOJO and WLEY before I'll ever reach North's show (whatever the wife was listening to the night before).

Now we're getting somewhere. What radio executives SHOULD do and what they ACTUALLY DO aren't always the same thing. Mr. B has sifted through the hyberbole and arrived at the core of the issue. The "should" part does not always enter into the end result. I haven't stated 'GN "should" hire anybody... just used that station as an example of one that may be feeling desperation -- especially in PM drive -- and could be one of the players in the North scenario this year. I may open a thread this week on the things the four stations for which I've worked since '85 SHOULD have done, but didn't. Good way to start the day thinking, Mr. Belvidere. Thanks.

Ok Ok lets not get carried away here. Murph's show is only slightly more entertaining than being kicked in the nuts repeatedly. At least when you're listening to North's show you can make fun of his stupidity...Murph is just excruciatingly bland, boring radio.

God have you ever turned into a pompous blowhard. Go have a f'ng drink.
Here's an idea, instead of pontificating here on the radio industry, why don't you spend time preparing for that shitfest you call a show. It used to be the best in the city, but now your show is clown time with an ego-maniac. You show sucks and your commentary on the radio industry is no better. I know you think North brings in advertisers, but NONE are exclusive and would (and do) advertise elsewhere, as do yours. I know that fat head of your's keeps swelling, but I can't figure out why.
The only option North has to make any money is at YOUR station and I don't see that happening. Mike and Mike trounce the POS and you aren't giving up your slot, so guess what? Lower paycheck or out of town. Pretty funny, I think. Crap radio is crap radio and you and North are both putting out crap.
Don't bother telling me not to listen, as you have told others, I have already stopped as have many others that used to regularly listen.
