I've never particularly cared for tomatoes, especially as a kid where most tomatoes sold wholesale/retail tasted like plastic.

My thoughts...

Paradise Pup - Its on River Road in Des Plaines. Always a line and not much room to sit, but the food is worth it. Their char dog is my favorite hot dog, but I usually go there for the BBQ chicken sandwich only (with Merkts cheddar fries and a shake!).

Superdawg - Yeah, the bun is soggy, but its a really damned good hot dog with great pickle and fries.

Gene and Judes - Hot dog is not bad, but the fries are the real draw for this place. Been coming here for years and years.

Portillos - While I don't understand how this place is always crazy busy, the hot dogs are pretty good. Their cheddar sucks though, so I only ever get the Chicago style.

I've been there twice for the Merkts burger and always left underwhelmed considering just how beloved it is by some.

I actually don't like their burger. The BBQ chicken sandwich is where its at. The fries have changed unfortunately. Used to be cajun style.

The next time I'm in Des Plaines stuck in a snow/rainstorm (like my last two visits) I'm gonna give that a try on your recommendation.

Down here in Joliet of all the places you named we only have a Portillos, Ive never had it because of the crazy long lines but are you saying they don't put cheddar on the Chicago style?

The place to get a good dog down here for the most part is Joes on Plainfield rd. Its nothing special and its not Chicago style, its sloppy drunk hotdog and they only take cash.

No cheddar. Chicago style, if I can remember correctly, includes mustard, relish, onions, pickle, celery salt, tomato wedges and sport peppers.

True story, used to work at a hot dog stand.

Portillo's is good, but overpriced and overrated.
Been to Superdawg and that is really good.
Gene and Jude's is on my bucket list.

There are decent options in the suburbs. Sammie's has a few locations in Lake County and theirs include cucumber, which is a nice touch.

Slott's (R.I.P.) in Libertyville closed within the last 2 years. They had been open since 1980 and I loved that place.

I used to go to Skokie every Tuesday back in the day for meetings.

Always went to lunch at U Dawg U located in Village Crossing on Touhy.

Great dogs, charbroiled burgers and sausage. Fresh cut fries were terrific as well.

Haven't been back that way in years and I hear it is no longer there.

I think it's now a Dear Franks which has another place in Deerfield.

Yes - haven't been by that area in years, couldn't remember the name. Do remember the meticulousness of the guy putting the dog together though. Is it still around?

All their food is prepared at Alinea. They just label it Kirkland.

$1.50 for an all beef Costco hot dog the size of a horse schlong, & a 32 ounce pop. Great deal & a damn good wiener.

There is too much description and information in that post.

We will defer to your expertise i guess.
